too many internships?

i know this may seem like a dumb question, but i have to ask anyway.
when applying for an internship is it ever a detriment to have had too many internships? do employers ever think they would prefer to give a student who has not had the opportunity to intern a chance over the person who has done 2 or 3?
the reason i ask is that i have seemed to hit a plateau. i have interned for 3 multinational highly respectable companies, all where ive competed with at least a 1000 applicants for a few positions. on all 3 i have done real work that has been published, two complete retail fronts, and a brand identity that they actually used. i believe my book is solid and i have adobe student awards and aiga awards backing that up. i cant seem to get any calls back for a summer gig. i am not trying to say i am hot shit, i definitely realize there are students with books just as good or better out there, but after sending out literally about 50 or so apps i would think i could at least get ONE interview. these are all to companies that are actually hiring too.

- ive been paid $25 bucks and hour plus housing, flights, free trips to new york, meeting celebs, partying with Girl Talk and Pharell...hardly slaverypantoneprincess
- that should be 25 buck an hour
pantoneprincess - As an intern you can acquire a lot of knowledge which is difficult to measure money wise - of course it depends on whom you're working for.alex

all my internship have been paid very well
ive met pharell, girl talk, julia casblancas, santogold
ive gone to new york several times for free and stayed at the best hotels

Pharrell isnt taking interns, and I dont have his info, my former boss does however.
Any feedback on the actual question?
Can too many internships be a detriment?
- experience is never a detriment. sounds like you're ready for FT positon though, right? go for that.ifeltdave

Seriously, I thought that a person would do one internship then get a job. I thought thats the way it works. My view would be that a place is either looking for an intern or they are looking for a full time designer. With so many people suffering due to the 'R' then it would make more sense for a company to hire someone that would be there for the long haul as getting someone up to speed (I'm not suggesting that you are in any way slow or not good at your job) takes time.
Thats my take on it, anyway. i can ask craig charles what he thinks but the restraining order is hampering my contact with him.

shitehawk, but Im applying to places asking for interns, lol
thanks for taking a stab

I would say, it doesn't matter if the work is solid.
Though, why didn't you get a job at the places you were?...besides getting the experience, it's about getting inside and trying to stay there.- that could be what other employers are wondering, and it could be a turn off...hmmm? good questiionpantoneprincess

uan , one place is on a hiring freeze...i would absolutely sell my soul to work there, most amazing place, but they told me they cant take on any new hires.
one place will be my backup if nothing else works out
the other i dont want to ever work there, good experience, but too corporate
- pantoneprincess0
uan thinking more about your question, i wonder if that is what other ppl are wondering and i look like im not employable long term on my resume.
- uan0
1 way of solving that would be with good recommendations in your portfolio that explain why they couldnt hire you.
but maybe someone with more experience than me should help you here!
- Leigh0
If you were that good, one of the agencies would of kept you on? or if you are still studying ... taken you back?
- pantoneprincess0
leigh i already exaplined that
one, cant because of hiring freeze, they would if they could they said it may be a year
the others, i can go back to after i graduate in may, one i may if i dont find a better op, the other one i dont want tootry reading first

Sounds to me like you have had 3 internships, and none of them hired you on full-time, leading the employers to believe you know the answer to questions before you even ask the question.
- that is what im thinking too
im going to take 1 off my resume for the next apppantoneprincess
- that is what im thinking too
- Leigh0
50 apps not one interview.
Do the math.
- pantoneprincess0
youre right leigh
everything else ive achieved is a fluke
get a fucking life
i will panic at the end of may (when im sure theyve done all the calling and hiring) and end my design career with death by xacto

if you've done 3 internships why not just go for a junior position instead?
- ive applied for a mix of things including that
the economy doesnt help much
companies that are fired designers are taking interns
cheaper laborpantoneprincess - true - well hope ya get something soon, if you've 3 internships done you should have gained good expluo
