brooklyn heights is as expensive as manhattan.
East Harlem is the only affordable place in Manahattan.
- Not true. It is affordable all over Manhattan. I just found a 2 bedroom in hells kitchen for $1800 a month that was large enough to turn into a 3 bedroom. I also heard Stuy town in the E. village is cheap now, as is the LES. Don't listen to these people, they obviously haven't been looking at rentals lately.bump79

Hey boom... I have lived in a few different areas—West Village, LES, Williamsburg. West Village is just too expensive. LES is not much cheaper and quite frankly has lost all its character and cool night spots it retained even 5 years ago. Williamsburg is still pretty nice, especially if you like good restaurants. It and neighboring Greenpoint are the epicenter of the food and bar renaissance in the city, plus this is where the pretty females are. The downside IS some of the younger hipster douchebaggery and lousy housing infrastructure in Greenpoint (all Polish built clapboard rowhouses or newer developer condo craptastic cardboard architecture junk). But it's definitely and interesting neighborhood.
Long Island city has a pretty waterfront with a view of the UN but is mostly a big yawn...
One cool neighborhood that I have not heard mentioned is Carroll Gardens, adjacent to Park Slope. There are some pretty cool night spots around here, a neighborhood with an intimate residential feel, and great access to Manhattan via the F train.
DUMBO-don't do it. I have my studio here. The food is mostly lousy and it still feels like a ghost town at night (i.e. commuter city). Plus the residential rents are ridiculously overpriced. It's a great place for commercial space, however (home of many digital studios).
Whoever said Hoboken doesn't understand why New York is appealing to live in.

http://freewilliamsburg.com/And just thought of one pretty good tip... You could try SOUTH Williamburg, near the JMZ elevated rail where the Hassidic Jewish and Dominican neighborhoods come together. It might look gritty on the outside, but there are many hidden gems around here (e.g. Moto) and the access to Lower Manhattan is 10 minutes.
