Update: So I ended up getting a 2.26 8-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 16 gb of rama 24" monitor. What I've learned after purchasing this beast, I now have a way better comp than the whole IT combined :). For real, I need to render video while taking advantage of my new pony. Working locally is best. But should I buy a raid system or just add internal hard drives? My budget is around $500.

get a 13" with SSD and 4gb ram. use an external monitor. then you actually have something portable.
17" monitors are fucking stupid. might as well just buy a desktop.

Are all u cats under the age of 18? Back in the day, us old guys did after effects and c4d on the first 500 MHz g4 laptops - and it worked fine, + I was at Scifi at the time (post mueller) - so during renders - we all sat around and played halo -
Now, all u whipper-snappers - get the hell off my lawn.

don't run all shit on your main HD. get a fast EX. HD with Firewire 800.

better buy the 15" and hook it up to a 24" when working at the desk.

will all new macs allow the hard drive to be swapped with a SSD drive if you decide to get one in the future when the price comes down?
- I understand so. It's the same SATA interface all along.raf

The bottleneck of a computer is the hard drive: a desktop drive is still faster, even if both are 7200 rpm. That's the main difference between desktops and lapyops. Fast SSD memory will even (or wipe) this out soon though. Even if your MB doesn't come with one of these now, they'll be cheap enough upgrades in a year or two.
Note: I hear Apple installed SSD drives aren't the fastest around. You'll be ok getting your mb with a large 7200 rpm dirve, or better get a standard drive and upgrade it yoursrelf with a 7200 drive with 5 years warranty. It'll cost the same and you will have the original drive for external storage.
- i played with a mbp with a ssd and wasnt to impressed. im not sure about those drives yet on the writingdeathboy

get a fast hd. got a 17" mbp 4gigs of ram and performance sucks becuase of slow hd. of course if u want a workhorse just build a pc desktop on the cheap. or a more expensive mac if u care about the OS so much...... OSX's are friggin ram hogs. if u really want performance u should go windows.

Why not get a shit hot Mac Pro desktop and then buy this new tablet Apple are supposed to be coming out with for client meetings etc...

I'd wait until after the 9th September too, if they do release an update I guess they will be even more built with Snow Leopard in mind.

I have that config w/ 8 gig. Plenty plenty.
Wait to buy though.
Snow Leopard coming Aug 28th. Apple also has something going on Sept 7th. Usually when that happens, upgrades and discounts happen as well.

Your grand on this MacPro one thing I've noticed, always turn off SAFARI when you need a good handful of ram, have noticed that it takes up to 1.3gb sometimes (though I do have about 40 odd sites running in tabs)
- I do that too and all those flash sites in tabs add up.CyBrain
- memory cell tell me the same thing w/ firefox - always thought it was just an errorfrediscrazy

People want laptops these days. Sometimes I wish my big fat Mac Pro would be movable and feather light like a laptop.

Let me ask you. What's your other option? Do you already have a desktop Mac? because if you can easily afford that MacBook Pro then why not go tits out and get the Mac Pro Desktop
