i'm gonna be out west in october, taking my time traveling between 3 cities... seattle, portland, then san fran.
been reading thru the seattle and portland threads but have one question: how would YOU travel from seattle to portland? train, bus, rental car?
i'm planning on renting a car to drive down part of the coast between portland and sf, but haven't made any plans for getting to portland from seattle, yet...

Car gives you the most freedom.

car.. tried that trip on train.. it was brutal
rent a car, take in that coast

took the train once. didn't think it was bad, but if you have a couple of days to kill then rent a car, there's a ton of cool side stuff to see between the two cities.

thanks! love trips so i was kinda hoping that it'd be worth the drive.
anyone have experience using priceline [or something similar] to book cars? have never booked a car that didn't stay in the same city before.

tried alamo and hertz before - i can't remember how much it cost for a different return location but it wasn't that bad

we took a one way rental from seattle to portland it was excellent trip. really top mexican food from La Tarasca (a crummy little 50's shack on main street) in centralia
then mount st helens for volcanic awesomeness
then thru wine country to the coast

after centralia, get off at chehalis, head out to the coast and follow the coast down to oregon. good times.

Car rental. It's a beautiful ride and a great opportunity for stopping for photos.

Totally a car.
Seattle - Portland budget 3 hours.
Portland to SF - Budget 12 hours. Those are pretty high, so you can do Portland to Seattle in 2.5 hours. Portland to SF, you can do in 10 hours.
How much time do you have?
- You must drive fast dibec :)p-mac

You could take a train from SEA to PDX but I think it would be more fun to drive from PDX to SF.
When are you making your trip? I'm driving from PDX to SF next Thursday.

It's a bit of a detour, but I recommend heading over to Mt St Helens. Visit Ape Cave. Really cool - literally, dress warm.

hmmm-- threads are all about touristy stuff
don't usually like touristy things. anything the locals like, i'm into. hoping to bring my bike along and explore while my friends are at work. any fun ideas and/or dive bar recommendations welcome

I did Seattle to Portland on train and loved it. You can just sit back, relax and take in the scenery instead of having to stare at the road. Sounds like you'll have plenty of driving anyway. I'd mix it up.

joeth, good point... don't wanna get burned out. guess i'll just wait and see how i feel, or whether i'm crunched for time
