"I know what you are thinking when you first get here, "What in the hell? Another website gallery with some links and stuff?! I'm out of here." Hear me out though. As of right now, in my not so humble-kiss-my-ass opinion the design community sucks. Back in the day (I'm talking years) I used to love to be apart of this community, but then I drifted away only to come back to a million Top 50 lists."
Scrivs issue is that he has too much time on his hands and "assumes" there is such a thing as a design community.
Such thing does not exist at all. It is something coined by people who are 20 and want to hook up with a gazillion other designers on forums, messageboards etc. While all they *need* to do is find the discipline to learn and connect with things and people that are worthy their time and/or interests.
A lot of DTP workers at magazines etc. go to sites like Smashing all the time. Looking for quick and easy to find resources. I think a lot of us do as well.
It just seems that Scrivs has lived under a rock for ages and found out that the internet has expanded and the diversity florished. And apparently that bothers him.
Tough luck i guess.

sequoia just because you're a broke loser doesn't mean the rest of us are. Many of us find jobs on here.

What do I propose instead of personal choice?
Elitism. Hierarchy. Standards of Excellence. I want only the best of the best. Not a thousand "personal choices" that end up being "mediocre choices" or "horribly biased" choices.------
finobacci,
i don't know what to say.
beyond words here.

ah, at first I thought FUCK YEAH! Finally someone says out loud that SM sucks real bad.
But the truth is that they aren't bad for gathering useful webdev gimmicks.
They do SUCK absolutely for anything design/inspiration related. And every time I see yet another list of 50 bestest beautiful professional and FREE fonts I want to jump off a cliff because only 2 are usually any good and are foundry demos.People should stop mixing up designers and developers and the web would become a much less ugly place.

Both websites are examples of shallow posturing.. the only reason the smashing magazine exists is to attract eyeballs and raise cash. The only reason drawar exists is to create kudos for the owner.
Neither are driven by passion for design, because if they were they'd probably be interesting.

that site contains a ton of scrolling. they totally copied other sites. lol.

What you all are missing is that these kinds of posts aren't specific to the design community. It's simply a function of people finding the most effective tricks to dive hits to their site.
If high-minded theoretical discussion drove the most hits, then I'd imagine we'd see more of it. As it is something like "the 50 greatest paint splatter techniques of 2009" is more where the public's mind is at, so we see that.

Some people seem to have nothing to do... Get to work and stop whining.
