Love the content, but the site is just really fucking ugly imo.

CRAP ... build should stick to print design (maybe)

No.

I like the photography.

I may be missing the anti design establishment criticism there, but I think that the user experience of that website is insulting.
The ironic thing is that if someone else did a similar thing would be labelled crap starting from the first post and the thread would go on with images of failboats and such.

Why is the reaction to most of these feeds always so negative?
Take the comments around Builds design for photographer Jason Tozer as and example.
Why do other designers feel the need to bad mouth and put down other designers and their work? Interestingly the slander often comes flippantly and always hidden behind a made up profile name and with no links back to their own site or portfolio.
We also need to take into consideration the brief and also the client. Unless we worked on the project personally how can you criticize?
Yes you can dislike something as its not to your taste or not as you would have tried to do it. Design is subjective after all.
I have to say that all this negativity from designers about designers is simply a waste of energy.
Why not spend your time debating and discussing intellectually with a goal to benefitting from your time spent on QBN?
Any thoughts?

i really wonder what chossy thinks about this.

whysonetative:
take harsh critiques for granted. THAT is what this work is about. If you only want yes and amen please go do aquarel paintings in an elderly home.
design is about serving the content, or serving the purpose.
not about being fancy just for being fancy. that is eye candy, not design.if the guy gets more work due to this website it's a win.
other than that, things should arrive at those who wish to use his service: photography.
i know plenty of photographers who do very well with a shit website, so i wonder how much it matters at all.
that aside, this job (like a lot of other trades) is about learning and seeing different angles to it, to accept the views of others and take it or leave it.
Else do not post it here.

some of the photos are okay, but that site is a bloody mess.

This critique isn't that harsh. It's honest.
- bigtrickagain0

photography is aces though. hope the site gets fixed soon.

two questions:
did I ask to go fullscreen? and ? where is my prev and next button?

My honest but quite harsh opinion on Build is that he started out by quite clearly copying (or 'being heavily inspired by') some famous founding influences of graphic design, which requires some skill in itself but lacks real creativity and ingenuity, became quite famous through doing that and now produces this 'quirky' or 'funky' style of design which is accepted by people because he is fairly famous but is in otherwords just crap and frankly quite awful design. Nothing nice designed by build (in my opinion) is original and the rest is crap. Sorry but thats how the way I see it. I'm sure he is a lovely guy though and all that crap...

i like it only because it's different. the site reflects the chaotic nature of the work, rather than the typical clean layout/nav juxtaposed (my least favorte word ever. first time used.) with the abstract work.
i'm sure this is what the photographer had in mind and is probably quite happy with the result.
my only complaint is the fullscreen.
