some of the photos are okay, but that site is a bloody mess.

agree with lvl_13 comments about the type in the background being not just very - but incredibly - distracting. I also don't like that the work removes itself a level from the actual website. It also has some unexpected functionality that i'm not quite sure is necessary - the zoom feature.
The work itself is quite nice... but on a whole my assessment is that you put a lot of pretty stuff in an ugly box.

Way to much going on. I like when photo sites highlight the photography. Not the decoration around it.

Well i don't like that custom font, but thats subjective.
I don't like the repetitive name in the background, but thats subjective. What i do like is the innovative way the wordpress template is used & that you can see pictures full screen & the gorgeous work of Tozer.
- The repetitive name in the background makes the content unreadable, which isn't subjective.lukus_W

This critique isn't that harsh. It's honest.

I really do enjoy Mike's work_
And have to say I am very surprised to see Andale Mono.I was so sure that typeface died graphically in 1998.

what the fuck? the site looks hella broken. is it really supposed to be like that?
photography is aces though. hope the site gets fixed soon.

two questions:
did I ask to go fullscreen? and ? where is my prev and next button?

CRAP ... build should stick to print design (maybe)

My honest but quite harsh opinion on Build is that he started out by quite clearly copying (or 'being heavily inspired by') some famous founding influences of graphic design, which requires some skill in itself but lacks real creativity and ingenuity, became quite famous through doing that and now produces this 'quirky' or 'funky' style of design which is accepted by people because he is fairly famous but is in otherwords just crap and frankly quite awful design. Nothing nice designed by build (in my opinion) is original and the rest is crap. Sorry but thats how the way I see it. I'm sure he is a lovely guy though and all that crap...

i like it only because it's different. the site reflects the chaotic nature of the work, rather than the typical clean layout/nav juxtaposed (my least favorte word ever. first time used.) with the abstract work.
i'm sure this is what the photographer had in mind and is probably quite happy with the result.
my only complaint is the fullscreen.

Having worked with Jason twice now I can testify as to what a perfectionist he is (all of ours shots were painstakingly done in camera with no retouching afterwards), so I've no doubt that this is exactly what he wanted from the site. I'm also pretty sure he won't read any of these comments or care in the least what anyone else but he thinks about it so this is all kind of moot :) More power to him.
- Moot how so? You think we are tying to offend people with our honest opinions? This is a design forumset
- < what set saidbigtrickagain
- Moot in that none of this matters one jot. I just wanted to use 'moot' and 'jot' in the same sentence. Thanks.detritus
- It's all worth discussing just moot in that none of it will get back to him nor would he change it if it did.wordsarepictures
- wtf did he do, that teal image?DrBombay
- talking about MCP, sorry.DrBombay
- Clearly a collaborationgjd

I'm kind of fed up with the fad of self-indulgent irony in these flavours of design - the gushing of old school H-tag text in the background looks (to my humble eyes) naff and, more importantly, it distracts from the functionality. An important consideration when dealing with two distinct navigation mechanics between index and content pages, one of which (the conversational form on the index page) is 'non-standard'.
I guess it's a cool site for cool cats, and isn't meant for the types of people who, I imagine, would take one look at it and write it off. If only we were all able to be so confident with our potential clients. I guess I'm jealous that I'm not able to be quite so self-referencing.
What really irks is footer branding -
"Designed in Build - Built by Kleber - Using Wordpress"? I'm sure that a site of this size really only needs two of those references, or are we entering an age of branded designer sites now? "Hey man, I bought this site on Carnaby Street - wanna do violence?"Still, I'm not overly critting - it serves its purpose well and Kleber and Build are beyond question in my tiny, compliant mind.
- Whats wrong with a design/development credit on a site?ximeraLabs
- When the dev appears to consist of flidding around with a WP install? I don't know, what do you think?detritus
- Well, its not 'just a WP install'.ximeraLabs
- Quite a literal chap, aren't you?detritus
