I have a similarly mind-numbing bedroom to home office commute as utopian. Although there can be a pool detour as it's so bloody hot right now.

should be a nice 2.5 mile, 35 min trip, walking and the 48 bus... depending on SF Muni BLOWS though.

I take the train 35min to get to work. After 2 years of doing this you recognize the usual suspects. One particular guy, 40, red hair styled like james dean, occasionally tries to make conversation, but with my book and headphones as back up, it never lasts long. Recently we hopped of at the same stop and an interrupted window of opportunity which went something like this... 'hey, how are you going? so i've noticed you haven't been wearing your short skirts lately'. WTF! Creep!

on my train there's this crazy, homeless, white-haired old black guy that comes on who starts by yelling for donations and ends with removing his glass eyes and waving them around

I drive to work, around 45 mins each way, on a road which seems to attract the worst drivers in the world. I've been doing this nearly every day for 9 years and it's a miracle I've never had anyone crash into me.

my commute now is somewhat different to london where my problem was not getting squashed by buses.
In shanghai a bad commute to work can include, walking out the front door having an old lady banging a fish on the steps, A man losing grip of a headless chicken and i getting blood squirted right into my path narrowly missing me. people spitting. massive arguments. and the biggest danger... some cold green tea leaves being thrown out of a high rise. all within 150 meters to the office.
not good with a hangover.

Up at 6:30am out by 7, 10min car journey, 8min train journey, 35min walk. It could be worse I suppose but walking 3miles a day is a bit frustrating.

15 mins by car, from rural town (home) to city (office). The trip is short, but back to home helps to disconnect from work related things and meet wife and kids with fresh mind...

Vespa normally. 13 miles each way, takes about 40 minutes door to door. Parkings free. Costs about £6 a week in petrol.
ScotRail when it's icey or snowing, takes about 45 minutes, costs £7 a day and is never on time.
- It's cheaper to fly to Europe than commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh by train.monoboy

Car, 60 miles a day in total. Takes about an hour each way.
I add 5 miles to my journey just so I don't sit in gridlock. Costs me about £40-50 p/w in fuel and I fucking hate it.

5 minute bus or 30ish minute walk
only problem is avoiding the dense fuckwit cyclists who can't follow rules
