Earth Will Lock in 1.5°C of Warming By 2029 At Current Rate of Burning Fossil Fuels
n a little more than five years – sometime in early 2029 – the world will likely be unable to stay below the internationally agreed temperature limit for global warming if it continues to burn fossil fuels at its current rate, a new study says.
The study moves three years closer the date when the world will eventually hit a critical climate threshold, which is an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since the 1800s.
Beyond that temperature increase, the risks of catastrophes increase, as the world will likely lose most of its coral reefs, a key ice sheet could kick into irreversible melt, and water shortages, heat waves and death from extreme weather dramatically increase, according to an earlier United Nations scientific report.
Hitting that threshold will happen sooner than initially calculated because the world has made progress in cleaning up a different type of air pollution — tiny smoky particles called aerosols. Aerosols slightly cool the planet and mask the effects of burning coal, oil and natural gas, the study’s lead author said. Put another way, while cleaning up aerosol pollution is a good thing, that success means slightly faster rises in temperatures.

Greenhouse gas emissions soar – with China, US and India most at fault
Satellite tracking data shows many countries and firms do not provide accurate figuresElectricity generation in China and India, and oil and gas production in the US, have produced the biggest increases in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015, when the Paris climate agreement was signed, new data has shown.
Emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, have also risen, despite more than 100 countries signing up to a pledge to reduce the gas, according to data published on Sunday by the Climate Trace project.
The data shows that countries and companies are failing to report their emissions accurately, despite obligations to do so under the Paris agreement. More than 190 countries have been meeting in Dubai since Thursday in an attempt to put the world on track to meet the Paris goal of limiting global temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
At the core of the Cop28 UN climate summit in Dubai is a process known as the “global stocktake” – an assessment of progress towards meeting the emissions cuts needed to stay within the 1.5C limit. Many countries, however, have failed to make updates.

2023 Was the Hottest Year Ever Recorded ... By a Lot
A new report warns that January is on pace to mark 12 months of temperatures exceeding the 1.5°C limit scientists warn could usher in irreversible climate catastropheCLIMATE SCIENTISTS ARE ringing in the new year with alarming data: 2023 was the hottest year ever on record, and not by a slim margin.
A new report published by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a component of the European Union’s climate change observation program, found that “2023 is confirmed as the warmest calendar year in global temperature data records going back to 1850.”
According to the report, “2023 marks the first time on record that every day within a year has exceeded 1°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial level for that time of year,” and that January of 2024 is on pace to mark a 12-month period during which temperatures exceed the 1.5°C increase threshold scientists have warned could lead to catastrophic, irreversible climate ramifications if sustained.

Iceland eruption confirms faultline has reawakened
Sunday's eruption was the fifth in fewer than three years on the Reykjanes peninsula, which had not previously seen one in centuries.
"After eight centuries of a relative break and a complete cessation of surface activity, we have entered a new episode of plate separation which could last several years -- possibly decades," volcanologist Patrick Allard from France's Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris told AFP.

if anyone has an hour and a lot of brain cells to spare, have I got a video for you!
well watch the first 2 minutes anyway.
The whole video is one long "if we evolved from monkeys then why are there monkeys" gotcha! style argument given by Tucker and an astrophysicists pretending to be a geologist and a biochemist but comes off as the owner my local dim-sum place that I shoot the shit with and I mean that with the upmost respect.

Atlantic Ocean circulation nearing ‘devastating’ tipping point, study finds
Collapse in system of currents that helps regulate global climate would be at such speed that adaptation would be impossibleThe circulation of the Atlantic Ocean is heading towards a tipping point that is “bad news for the climate system and humanity”, a study has found.
The scientists behind the research said they were shocked at the forecast speed of collapse once the point is reached, although they said it was not yet possible to predict how soon that would happen.
Using computer models and past data, the researchers developed an early warning indicator for the breakdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), a vast system of ocean currents that is a key component in global climate regulation.
