Facebook is just another tool in the toolbox. Sure, maybe there is a lot of nails out there that need hammering, so everyone wants to use the hammer right now. Does that mean your should throw away the rest of your tools and hope the hammer does everything you need? Nah, next week the pipes may leak and you discover you need a wrench instead.

I've been talking to a few artists and designers in the UK about this - I'm glad this post came up. Everybody I've spoken to rates Flickr highest, then FB and Twitter, then their own site.
I like having my own site, but would sooner make my site into a four section thing: CV, Flickr portfolio, Twitter feed and FB page. Just not found a nice way round that yet.
Frames?
hoho

there seem to be a trend on this board of web designers being in complete denial when challenged with the realities of evolving technology, ie. Flash, FB vs. website etc.

Stop trying to sell site-centric solutions because they look good in portfolios.

Just get a domain that re-directs to Facebook (also get that same name for the facebook.com/username URL).
Easy name to remember + an interface lame clients understand and think is "cool".
If the web changes, you can get off of Facebook and put all your information at that domain name again.

What problems are being solved by having a 'personal site'? What kind of person would a target for one of these sites?
I'm not sure I understand.

In branding in general on a wide arrange of Brands of various medias , I see logos for Twitter and FB and no mention of the own .com , could it be a budget item as Fan Pages can be set up by 11 year olds?
What boggles me is that people would much rather have say 50k friends or followers and what not , but they won't back it up with anything to get results off that much traffic , it all goes to FB and ad networks and they see $0.00 , FB ad system charges you to promote a facebook page , kinda brilliant no in a money making scheme kind of way , but you can redirect to a website with an a ad affiliate (google ad sense) and cash in on the traffic , it is a tough sell out here

soon internet won't be unlimited usage anymore. It will be like cable with a few main orwellian sites and thats it.

I wish saying something is "dead' would die. A slight decrease in something's relevance doesn't make it "dead".

I think once people realize you can't say and do everything with a social network the personal site will come back, it'll just be more dynamic and personal.

I think this may be the case with artists, musicians, etc. - basically people with little to no budgets. I also think this is another example of ignorance in the market where it's our responsibility (or duty) as designers to explain to these people that they still need a personal site and should consider social as another channel. Again, if there's a cost effective way for people to have any type of web presence, they'll opt for the simplest, fastest, cheapest way to achieve that goal.

Tie it all together - create a 'lifestream' site.
Nauseating expression / concept .. but it could work.
