Not a terrible ending, but not fantastic either. Given how convoluted some story arcs had carried the show over the seasons, I think they did what they could to tie some things up. I think overall the Jacob and Esau(Man in Black) mythos was a little underwhelming. So much more potential in their origins and what they truly could have been.

Where was Walt? He was such a critical character in the first few seasons and nothing in the finale? I mean, they brought Shannon back... wtf.
- mihael was a bad man... so he was forced to stay on the island... so im sure walt stayed as wellgarretttt
- Walt is "8 feet tall now" according to Jimmy Kimmell. So they kept him away for being a freak.mg33
- I thought they were casting Karim Abdul Jabar to play Walt this season... guess I was wrongpartdeux
- Walt's dead and trapped on the island. We saw that a few episodes ago.ETM

I think this confirms what I suspected all long: the writers never had any idea what any of it meant.
By the middle of Season 5 they emerged from a coke induced haze and were all like, holy crap, what have we done.

I... Uhhh... What did I just watch? I'm totally disappointed in this ending, can't believe they have ended such a huge storyline like this.
.. and I know I'm not the only one thinking this. I'm not sorry for watching it, I'm just disappointed.

So what happened at the end.
- to be honest, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't like what I sawmonospaced
- Please tell me they did not all die at the end.pillhead
- they were dead the whole timemonospaced
- hahahahahahah what a load of shit, glad I didn't waste my time watching this.pillhead

@monospaced they were not dead the whole time. Walt was on the island and he was not in the church and he did not die. Everything that happened, really happened.

So is the general consensus that the ending was a bit disappointing? I stopped watching it a little into series 3 so none of what I've read makes any sense at all.
but, it can't have been as bad as the ending to Ashes to Ashes

On Jimmy Kimmel last night, his theory was that this was all about Jack's final 'test' of himself - him facing his internal struggle to save, and care for everyone else, except himself. The island odyssey was him coming to terms with his internal demons. When he sits down in the church and accepts his fate, he dies and escapes the island through death - (his eye closed).
I agree though - too many unanswered questions left after six years - as in all the one's that MrMackem pointed out above. Glad as hell that is all over with!

The flash sideways was apparently purgatory from when they died on the island :/
Really disappointing ending with nothing relevant explained...
- NOT purgatory...it was something they all created to be togethermonospaced
- But the basic idea was like purgatory, them coming to terms with themselves before they died. Such a cop-out!Funkmonk
- Not even close to purgatory. Nothing to do with good/evil. Just a few lost ghosts.monospaced
- Either way, non of it made the least bit of sense O_O So many loose ends...Funkmonk

There's a glowing hot tub in the center of the island, with a cork in it. If you take the cork out, the island starts to shake, and the smoke monster becomes human. If you put the cork back in, Jack giggles like a schoolgirl on acid and is magically teleported out of the hot tub into a nearby lake, then dies next to a dog.
Magical. Really.
Every single episode since season 3 was a nightmare culminating in a glowing hot tub.

so this was all about jacks little dreamworld ?
fuck sake - that it !!!

@rson I think they were all dead the whole time. The plane blew up and broke in half in the air, crash-landing on an island thousands of feet below. Survivors? The fact that the wreckage was the final scene kind of solidified that, don't you think?
- Nope everything really did happen. The 'sideways' was purgatory for when they died on the island. Walt would have been in the church if they were all dead.rson
- in the church :(rson
- You have to be a retard to think that was purgatory. Sorry.monospaced
- ghandolf0
Actually, I think the wreckage in the final scene, was for the tourist stop/attraction. That's where the future boardwalk on the $25.00 tour is going to lead to and end - so you can get your picture of the final scene. They had to 'burn' that into our memories to create interest for the coming attraction for tourists to the island - that's my guess.
