So, I refuse to believe the alternate universe was "purgatory," as many of my friends suggested.
I think it was not until they had the moment of "enlightenment" that they reach purgatory and are able to enter that church-ish thing to meet up with everyone else. Maybe.
Someone explain and confirm/deny.

"Some people need everything in a neat little package. No imagination." That's quite a precious conceit.
Given that I have no imagination of my own, I'll leave it to this link in Wired which adeuately sums up my 'disappointment' in the conclusion: http://www.wired.com/underwire/2…

I thought it was pretty good. Quite positive.
They learned some lessons and moved on to the next stage. A new life.Very much what life is about for people that believe in metaphysics.

Why no Mr. Eko on ‘Lost’?
There were plenty of questions surrounding the “Lost” series finale, and while many will remain forever unanswered, there is one that can be addressed: Where was Mr. Eko?Nearly every other major character returned for the episode, but Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who played the warlord-turned-priest, did not.
According to E!, the issue was money. “According to ABC and ‘Lost’ insiders, Adewale was offered a hearty sum to do one scene in the last hurrah, but the actor wanted five times the amount that was offered. It didn't work out,” according to the E! report.
Ironically, one character who was killed off the show because of a reported money dispute was back: Ian Somerhalder, who played Boone. “He continued to want more and more money,” said one ABC insider. “More than cast members with lots more screen were getting. So they let him go.”
