Is it too late to point out that the design was not a massive fuckup? Engadget and Anandtech both say the reception is generally better and transfer speeds are faster with Anandtech doing actual testing and research.

You solve the problem by buying a case, so your fingers are not in direct contact with the antenna!

As much as I find Gruber annoying... http://daringfireball.net/2010/0…

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy -- your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4's overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.
2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don't forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers -- DON'T promise a free bumper to customers.

While it shouldn't be all that acceptable, I have accepted that it is never a good idea to buy a first gen apple product. Dumb consumer cunts, fine, but designers and the like who know about tinternets and such should know this too.
- it's a 4th GenESKEMA
- hardly, its a brand new design not an update to an existing one.set
- were the first macbooks 1st gen or 6th gen because of all the ibooks.... ?? stupid comment.set
- First gen of this case design, and you're right: never be first to buy version .0 of anything. I should have knowncomicsans

Is the reception issue really an issue? I was thinking the same but actually the reception thing doesn't bother me. No calls have dropped yet.
- and you can always wait - the next one will always be better.Atkinson
- True, I was using iit on a bus as a browser and reception dropped twice in the space of 5 minutes.comicsans
- in a location that reception would drop on any phone?Atkinson
- The aerial design is flawed and don't want to spend £600 and be stuck with it if a better one is out shortlycomicsans
- Re that location, never happened before, not scientific but it's my £600comicsans

I'd guess they will sort it out by handing out free bumpers to anyone who bought it and shove one in the box for new purchases (remember the Wii and the remotes flying out of peoples hands). Then release a fixed version this time next year

I love this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/techn… so essentially its the fault of us misrepresenting the actual signal and your in a low coverage area its really got nothing to do with closing the circuit on the antena is a massive design fuck up on our behalf. I mean ffs when your wrong your wrong just put your had up apple and quit with this bullshit

1st gen or 4th gen... call it what you want. It is the first revision of a new model. They're always a risk, regardless of who made them — but people never learn.
