What would you think are good Type exercises and projects for "Type beginners"?
I have a list of ideas but would love to get your opinion... Thanks!

in my first typography class we had to design book jackets given the title, author and a blurb. wouldn’t say it was the best lesson but it’s a solid exercise to get into the character of the typeface you’ve chosen as well as laying out a composition and learning about the book as a 3D object

- I like the look of those. I wonder if they are still available.Sandman_1982

in another lesson we had to take photos of typography in public space (shop signs etc) and then we had to make a small book with these photos. I wish they would have tought us more of the basics instead of giving us such a fun project.

I hear you pressplay. As much as it should be fun, fundamentals should be taught first in order to understand it properly... Any other suggestions for Type projects? Thanks!

I remember an exercise where we were given 2 covers of books/magazines in total different styles and we had to set the text of the covers in the style of the other.
it's an exercise for finding/recognizing fonts and precise observation, I learned a lot out of this exercise. the covers I had were some like this:
- chukkaphob1
- that would be a cool agency name: great.commekk
- you mean a "great" agency name (not a "cool" one)chukkaphob
- chukkaphob-3
- 'Beyond being just a typeface, it's a mess'. Reminds me of the shit I used to gurgitate in university.detritus
- yeah this does nothing for typographymonospaced

- how? text mapped to 3d object in illustrator? cant think of best way for that...********
- I tried in Illustrator, and it only works over a small section at a time.monospaced
- it's funny, there was a time -- and not that long ago -- when you could say for sure that someone actually drew it.Gnash
- someone did actually draw it.

http://www.madeup.or…imbecile - too perfect to be hand. Its possible in illy just a pain. Im unfamilair with capabilities of C4D but Id imagine that would be easier********
- http://i.imgur.com/n… reminds me i should use more maps********
- did the 'draw' it (old school) or use a combo of 3d software and filters?Gnash
- I don't mean to diminish the talent involved. I'm just saying that in days of yore, one needed to put brush to paper. twas the only way.Gnash
- Maybe cinema 4ddirtydesign

- Come on. It's a piece of piss in illustrator with some Photoshop to finish.Muncher
- I would bet the house this was done in a 3d package. And it would be much faster and easier to do it that way than any other, including by hand.CyBrainX

^
1 Create Text in Illy/PS
2 create wobble spline in Illu and export to C4D
3 extrude spline
4 apply texture
5 ???
6 profit
