For some reason I never really got into this site. Except now I've got a few things I'd like to sell.
Are there any tricks to build your rating for someone who doesn't have one? What about using third party sellers, is that worthwhile at all? Or should I just jump in and start listing stuff with zero feedback on my account and hope someone bites?

I don't think so. Either buy or sell, there's no other way to bump your rating.
- Ruffian0
I guess you could create fake accounts and buy/sell between them but that would be a pain :D

haha, yeah the thought did cross my mind.

Basically I'm all about gaming the system at any cost, so all ideas are appreciated.

My eBay score is only 4 and those 4 transactions have all been smooth. Post your stuff up and see, no biggie if no one buys but I doubt that they won't. What are you selling, if you don't mind?

Some computer and music equipment, and possibly some books

Why change that? Just to test the waters? eBay is a bit of a pain if it's not rare items or you're not making a business out of it. I only sold those items on eBay because I couldn't sell the items on Latvian "craigslist".

buy a bunch of really cheap things.... like batteries, memory cards,etc...

who would give a fuck about their ranking on ebay? unless you're a pro-seller that needs to look legit why would you care? i'd say you need a decent hobby but that's a pretty obvious factoid.

have friends raise ur bids

I doubt it'll matter much until you get into the 50+, maybe a 100+ or more. I buy a decent amount of things on there (all clothes, some amazing deals on shoes too) and consider anyone with less than a few thousand to be an amateur. Of which, I don't trust them because they have nothing to lose if things go bad.
Just assume you'll get less $$ than someone that has sold a 1000 similar things.

If you have something people want and 50 other guys aren't selling it, there are always people who will buy regardless of your rating.

the amount of items you've sold, or reviews or whatever won't matter when you're buying or selling, unless you're trying to sell something crazy expensive for super cheap. in that case it will look like a scam.
- so true. if it appears legit in price like it has a B.I.N. of market value then you're good.prophet

before setting a price, do an advanced search for your exact items but check "completed listings only" to see what people are willing to spend for them in recent auctions.
- ok thanks. i think i priced all my stuff super cheap. i will check into the advanced searchSrSamaurai

I've been burned by buyers before. When the rules changed so that sellers can no longer give negative feedback, buyers that operated like total cockmachines started treating sellers like shit. Which is why I have only neutral or negative feedback on my selling history - one case of buyers-remorse, and one case of selling to a total tool.
...sorry to rant. But if you start with a fresh account to sell with, be forewarned that you may get unlucky and get assholes for your first buyers... and you will then be stuck with negative overall feedback.

Didn't want to start a new thread.
Looking at buying my wife a new Macbook Pro. The baseline 2013 with Retina display retails here for $2499. I found a seller who was offering the same model - it had a few for sale with a 'make an offer' link.
So I made an offer about $600 lower than retail...and the guy said yes. Rang alarm bells straight away, so I contacted him and asked if I could pickup with COD. Again he said yes. Still supicious, I asked for some photos with the serial number. He sent them through. Checked the serial number on the Apple website and all checked out...still has about 11 months warranty.
Now my question is, how can this bloke sell them so cheaply other than them being 'hot'? And is there anything else I should be wary of? The box the laptop comes in is still in the plastic so it is brand new.
- yeah, seems like it fell off the back of a truck. do people still say that?sine
