.. from the states. anyone deal with this lately? seeking an available position but assuming the wait for the visa will take too long.

you'll have to pledge allegiance to the Queen of Canada, I hope you're comfortable with that.

Actually....
I've been thinking about this for a little while now. I live in Michigan literally across the river from Ontario - Sarnia is 1/2 hr away and toronto is about 2.5-3hrs. Would be great to get some insight as to what's available in Ontario, how wages and taxation works and the process required for a work visa.

Don't bother it sucks here.

You can get a TN visa at the border (done through NAFTA). you need a letter of employment and a college degree in a related field of your work.

i received an "informal" job opp. a few days ago. pretty much just need to get up there to make it happen. employer is willing to help with the necessary steps but was just wondering how long the process can/usually takes? might not be something i want to pursue if i have to wait 10 months.
- CQDE0
ETM,
something i wouldn't mind doing. especially since season is just around the corner. there's just something about waiting for a job, while hoping the employer waits for me, then hoping the feelings are still mutual.. pretty risky future. just trying to find the quickest and closest to guaranteed route.

life is short. go for it.

As far as I know all you'd need to do is show up at the border with your passport, school papers, possibly a bank statement and of course a letter of employment.
Shouldn't take more than 15 mins if you are clean.
i went through the same thing and it was quick.
- hmm why was i under the impression that this would take a few months?CQDE
- i mean, applying for the visa, maybe waiting for shit to go through, etc., then some more waitingCQDE

- there are different work visas, but it can be quick if you are a citizen of the countries under NAFTA.VectorMasked

You can get a one year work Visa. Usually takes about 3-6months to process. Or if you get offered a job you have to be sponsored in, which can take much longer (6-12 months). Also depends on the province you apply to. Different jobs carry different weights... for example if you are a doctor you'll be in asap but if you wait tables in New Jersey you'll be waiting a while. If an employer want to sponsor you in, they have to advertise it to the Canadian public and do interviews etc to prove no Canadian is qualified to do the job, then they can "import" you. It costs them about 5K so you must lay golden eggs or something. If you marry a Canadian it can still take up to a year to get your Visa (permanent residency). However I have seen guys basically talk their way over the border with no real paper work, just a few lawyers letters.
The fastest way into Canada right now is to apply to Alberta and work on the Oil Sands. You can get processed in 4months max. But you'll be destroying the environment and working with lots of dirty smelly men.
- this is the process i was informed.. thank you for clarifyingCQDE
- I came from europe so the process was different for me. TN might be the way to go.Cenitgrade

<sidenote>
We might be destroying the environment but we are employing a good portion of the country while we do it and contributing to the strong economic stature Canada has endured through the economic crisis
</sidenote>- <No opinions there... just stating fact. I actually am rather fond of this environment thing we live in.ETM

American and Canadian graphic designers can work in each other's countries very easily. You need what's called a TN visa which involves having a diploma in graphic design, 3 years experience, and a letter from your future employer. google tn visa for more info.
- ETM0
The only thing about an TN Visa is to make sure its clear that you are not planning to stay at all. If you can have the employment letter indicate that the position is somewhat temporary, it can help speed you across.
- However, I am only familiar with a TN Visa going from Canada to US, not other way. May be differnet.ETM
- no you are correct sir.VectorMasked

I got the TN visa and like I mentioned it only took me 15 mins at the border. It's valid a year but in can be renewed. I worked in canada with the TN visa for 3 years and renewed it twice.

Thanks for all the great info eh! :)
