I need to render something out of AE CS5 to a quicktime and get it to a relatively small weight at full size – have to upload / email to a client overseas and time is short.
It's at 1080px by 1920px and around a minute.
Any recommendations that are relatively simple to do?
Cheers

h.264
match keyframes to framerate
i don't usually do this out of AE though. render using animation or png then convert using quicktime pro or compressor.

i would ever export h.264 / mp4 from after effects, its incredibly problematic. Search google and you will get hundreds of forum threads of users having problems.
Ive asked the questions about it and had experts say, you just dont do it, its not done in the industry cus after effects renderer is completely dog shit with mp4 / H.264. (cheif doesnt do it so he wasnt to know, like he said - use a compressor after exporting)
- <this. I have nothing but problems with H264 out of AE.DoTheMacarena
- I usually create a droplet or use a watch folder with compressor if I need a review version.DoTheMacarena
- that's what i was saying, render lossless and convert later.Chief
- i delivered a .264 to a tv station a couple days ago, they coudnt do shit with itmoIdero
- why would you deliver a quicktime for broadcast as h.264? he needs to be able to email, not send to broadcast.Chief
- i was agreeing with you chief, in a very roundabout way :/ lolHombre_Lobo_2

Use Adobe Media Encoder....
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Your best bet is export it uncompressed as quicktime movie - animation (this is lossless codec), and the compress it in another piece of software like hand brake or adobe media encoder.
^good reminder on the key frames chief.
compress/convert the uncompressed footage (exported from AE) to h.264 / mp4, i usually default settings - target bitrate of 4, maximum bitrate of 6, level 5. should be good file size.

- Seems like we should add Compressor to the purple orb, but that's a good reminder. Thanks.CyBrain
- that would make sense! im a windows boy though, so didnt consider it :PHombre_Lobo_2

X264 is the best encoder

Raminsky I've yet to try that, but from what I've seen the compression is unreal!
- its excellent
I highly recommendRamanisky2 - ive seen torrent movies go crazy for that shit! everything with an x264 in the title, is gonna be sweet size!Hombre_Lobo_2

Isquint
Customise your settings, but will make file size crazy small.

Simpelest way is to do QuickTime - the click on format options - choose Photo Jpeg, then play with the quality, 60 secs of full qual should be about 6-800 Mb for that length depending on how much color change is going on, usually I do a full quality then compress that as Mp4 if it's not small enough.

if you dont have quicktime pro to do the export from a pro res AE render, use MPEG Streamclip, its a free app
H264, ACC sound, and maybe limit the data rate if its preview stuff
- DaveO0
Thanks for this guys! I'm gonna try these free apps....
- go with x264 not h264 trust me it looks so much better and will bring a 1 gig movie down to 31 megsRamanisky2

x264 is using h.264. it's the same thing minus the gamma shift. sometimes the results can be a little dark, like it's overcompensating so then you have to go and re-encode while brightening it up. if the gamma shift is a problem using h.264 you can adjust the gamma coming out of compressor... usually works perfectly.
- < The h.264 gamma shift is a Quicktime player issue, not h.264. If you compensate for it your file will be too dark in other players.nosaj
- good to know! bookmarking this shit, cheers broHombre_Lobo_2

If time was short I'd render as lossless animation then pass it through QT Pro and export as a Quicktime .mov using H264 compressor codec.
Episode reaaaaally comes in handy though in times like this. Just sayin.

This thread makes me cry.

- why douglas. open up,Hombre_Lobo_2
- i think we've given him 5 too many options for what he really needs to do. too confusing. could just post this: http://motionographe…Douglas

What's a Quicktime?
- nosaj0
Quicktime (the app) has a Gamma issue with .H264 mov's. They will appear "lighter" in Quicktime than they should. Don't try to adjust for Quicktimes display as if you where to re-encode the file the gamma issue will be gone and the file will be darker.
- I've been using x264 from quicktime earlier in the thread instead.PIZZA

So what's the best post-render software to do as an x264 – can i do that straight from AE?
- I always render an Animation Compression drom AE and then open in quicktime and convert to x264Ramanisky2

what i do, export animation uncompressed from after effects...this file into final cut (usually put the audio here) and the export using the Share option ... i have many presets already done.. so it's a pretty fast workflow...
