I work off the server everyday....That's how we do it here.

always working off the server...everyone always acts like Im crazy until the guy next to me has his harddrive dump and nothing is backed up to the server. oops :^/

Why are you even allowed to work directly off the server? Use a decent deploy script

this just happened at our office. had to restart the server, the files came back, and there was a temp file too. all was ok.

uhm. sometimes in indesign if shit happens there is still that temporary locked file. you can try to delete that locked file and it should open at the last saved point.
