To tediously, and outside the spirit of a tradition qbn thread, return to a previous point, made my @abettertomorrow, that the atheism/religion debate has clouded the discussion of morality generally, I would broadly agree, but to say that most of our 'moral' discussions take place in the Political arena, and so it's not hard to see why religion attempts to exert its influence there.
I think it's true that most of our moral philosophy is undertaken by Hollywood - 21st century morality and ethics are rigorously examined over, back and sideways in movies and tv. Concepts like the killing bad people to save innocents, of universal suffrage, the Golden Rule, etc, are played out endlessly but we don't necessarily associate them with any religious idea or creed, they are just moral problems and concepts to be examined and demonstrated.
As ever, morality is separate from religion, which attempts to impose itself on it, and wrestle away our cognitive ability to understand and operate it, supplanting our innate ability to judge fairness with a proposed supernatural 'ultimate' solution to our quandaries about justice and how to treat each other.
And this is all it has to offer that is unique - the supernatural. The natural order requires, demonstrably, no novel intervention - it operates quite successfully without it. To be religious means that you do accept the intercession of a supernatural process into the natural physical world, that does so to uphold a morality that may or may not accord to that which you could rightly discover of your own. In accepting this you must (blindly) accept that the actions of this entity include the apparently pointless misery and death inflicted upon innocent people the world over - the ravaging of disease, starvation and poverty upon billions, of victimisation of swathes of people and peoples in every period in history. You must accept that in allowing this happen - when it has the power to prevent it - is somehow moral, in a way that you do not recognise as any kind of morality of which you could conceive, being merely mortal, of dust, of a clot of blood, as you wish.
Common or garden morality then, as practised and examined by us all every day, is necessarily the enemy of religion. To be religious is to accept an unexaminable and irrefutable version of real moral philosophy that inevitably leads to wrong-doing for the benefit of its proponents, be it the tawdriness of vicarious redemption or the adherence to the nastiest and most illiberal tennents of the Old Testament, which bear fruit with such titles as The Defence Of Marriage Act.- "defense of marriage" what a joke, they make oaths "till death do us part" then get divorcesmoldero
