Well as someone who has followed this kind of music over the years...
I think the point here is that artists like Bass Nectar or Skrillex don't really have much to do with the actual dubstep scene that sprung up in London and the UK nearly a decade ago. But for some reason these artists have really taken off in the States, despite the fact that they would be laughed out of the room by the people who actually invented dubstep.
And yeah I agree to some extent, who gives a shit if people want to think this stuff is dubstep. But it's sort of like if Insane Clown Posse and Korn really took off, and people started to referring to that like it represented the totality of the hip hop scene. Obviously people who had been listening to hip hop for years would be slightly annoyed and want to set the record straight.
- everyone's a fucking critic. skrillex is boring bassnectar is entertaining.logi
- lols @ such a well thought diss, waste of time...logi
- haha, I thought it was a decent analogyukit
- the music is fine, people are harping on semanticsscarabin

why did they all ruin Jamaican Dub?
- why did dub ruin reggae, and why did reggae ruin motown, and why did motown ruin R&B, and...epic_rim
- haah haaah
RUFNEG!74LEO - lol_niko
- nothing can ruin R&B
it's pure shit alreadyProjectile - r&b is pure shit? r&b is basically used as a blanket term for black popular music going back to the 40's.kingsteven
- actually, is why did regggae ruin ska...fresnobob
- heh, and they were all influenced by jazz, - emancipated black parlor musicians playing classical music fused with blues and tribal rhythmskingsteven
- hence blues 'ruined' the anglo irish hymns taught to slaves...kingsteven
- arguably the rise of dubstep has more to do with the adoption of ableton than any sort of significant musical progression.kingsteven

so what's the hot shit now?
- dskz0
ok ukit name some artists or be called out on theory
- ThePublics0
Dubstep has fractured into different genres now, some good, others terrible, and the difference depends on the skill and creativity of the musician.
- ukit0
Do I really need to? There's a whole genre of music that has been around for years...and still followed by many more people than the American scene. It's not hard to find out about.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I heard Bass Nectar play before he ever called himself "dubstep". He had been DJing this bass + breakbeats style of music for years and jumped on the dubstep label once it became a buzzword.

Because ruining rites, archery, charioteering, calligraphy & mathematics wasn't enough. Those greedy bastards!

the real question is how do you ruin something that was utter shit from the start?
