I've been in the design industry for 8 years in UK and I'm itching to get off this island for a bit.
Ideally I'd like to spend 6-12 months in America, but instead of travelling around, I'd love to get in with a creative agency.
Has anyone done this, and does anyone have any advice they can give me?
Or better, anyone want to have a curious Brit in their company for, dare I say it... free?!

I'd start the Work Visa process now. My buddy who is a German has been waiting 4 months or so to get his so he could start working. Painful!

You'll want to be realistic, and look at the state of the US; it's simply not good, at all. Canada is a bit better, but senior jobs are more difficult to come by than junior or mid-weight ones.

This your portfolio?
- Yes, I need to update it, but as with your own work it always gets less priority than paying work!coolhipNgroovy

JSK do you have any advice/tips/crits?
- Definitely overhaul your port.antagonista
- Start contacting companies first before doing anything. Apply for all jobs listed. State that you will pay for visa process.JSK
- Getting into a big agency will be tough right now unless you have very stellar work.antagonista

I did it the other way round. I came to London after working in the states.
Piece of advice: DO NOT go to Boston. IMHO, SF, LA or NY are the best places
As it was mentioned before, ensure you have a visa. Not overly sure how it goes nowadays, though, but for short stays people used study-linked visas that also allowed some working.
Bear in mind that without papers you won't be able to get a job anywhere (even for free) unless you are into cleaning/cooking - as sad as it sounds.

Can someone explain to me the difference between a US Waiver Visa and a working Visa? I ask because when I went to Chicago two years ago I got a waiver visa online which was valid for two years.

^ US visa waiver program allows you to enter for 90 days or less without obtaining any other visa (business or pleasure). I'm not sure how long they are valid for. They are free. You can't receive any money from a US company under this visa.
A working visa isn't free and a right pain in the arse to get. Working visa= employment sponsor
