I'm moving to NY and just got an offer of $50k from my new job.
Any people with tips on what to save and what's the most I should think about spending on rent? It seems so expensive.

$50k is not a very good salary.
- need almost double thatmonospaced
- I know plenty of dancers and artists that don't "need" 100k to live in NYC.canoe
- lots of dancers and artists live in a crash-house like life.. that's what I did for a while...vaxorcist

you won't be able to save much with 50K in NY.
The best thing you could probably do is move to Queens - friend of mine lives there on less than that. 50K is low for most jobs - what do you do?

I thought 50k was decent for an entry level job.
- Not in NYC it's not.NONEIS
- I think it is... i dont know where you can find 100K entry level jobs.
hellojeehae - it is. would be 30k other wise.akrok

You can always live in NJ which is only a 30 minute train ride away.
- Really not that much cheaper.CygnusZero4
- Come on. Jersey?? He might not know better than to scoff at such a suggestion.CyBrainX
- plus you would pay double tax, NY State and NJ State income tax..epill

1/3, this means you need 3+ roommates and must live in Brooklyn – you don't have any other options making so little in such an expensive place.

depends on your lifestyle. sure a lot of people can get by perfectly fine on 50k. 34% seems to work pretty good, but if that doesnt allow enough savings by your lifestyle than u need to find cheaper places or find ways to decrease the cost.
funny that people think 50k is an appalling wage level. should be in first world problems thread, but than again never been there and only know a couple people from there that get by on less than that.

50k is fine for entry level - better than an unpaid internship.
my girlfriend (not a designer) was making 38k a few years back and she made it work.

In NYC maybe that's low, but everywhere else that about the right amount for an entry level job, if not lower.
- But I understand that the standard of living is different over there. Good luck with your move!Jaline

50k in NYC is not a lot, agreed. 50k in Albany, Rochester, etc. is more than enough to live comfortably.

Should I ask for more?
- if you have already agreed on an amount, it's going to be tough to go back and ask for more.dbloc

What kind of entry level is this?

NYC is kinda overrated - everybody chasing trends when there are so many other things in the world to embrace.
- ...says the guy in Michigan...
lol, what an over-generalization!monospaced - like saying that everyone in the midwest has no personality and shops only at WalMart... oh wait, that's truemonospaced

living with roommates are your best bets.
50K for entry level is pretty good. I know plenty of people working in NYC thats way below that for entry level. :p so don't worry!

but you can always spend part of your 50K every night eating amazing food... surrounded by people who make double or more what you make and don't think anything about taking a cab elsewhere for desert and annother drink.... it adds up really, really fast if you hang around people who make more than twice what you make,....

NYC is a sea of rich people who are spoiled and think their smarter and better than the rest of the world.
- just smarter than the rest of the country, not necessarily the world.CyBrainX
- "they're" smarter, obviouslymonospaced
- lol.akrok

Also a bunch of people who work all day long and struggle and aren't very happy.
