Anyone feel strongly one way or the other about the October issue of Print Magazine? Do people still read magazines in the US? That whole industry seems to be gone here in the UK. (I exaggerate a bit, but you know what I mean.)

That cover is almost offensive. And I know what you mean about the industry.
- That is the worst Print mag cover I've ever seen.CyBrainX

- Perhaps they used
crowdsourcing or better
yet, they hired CP+B to
design the cover?utopian - maybe it's so cool and cutting edge rockstar we don't even realize it's good yetmonospaced
- im guessing it's metahaven as noted on the cover.Douglas
- There's not much on their site, but this is their Tumblr. http://mthvn.tumblr.…CyBrainX

people still read magazines, but i think magazines like this are becoming less popular. personally i look for art/culture/fashion oriented magazines like purple fashion, self service, id, &c. haven't picked up one of those ^ in a few yrs now.
plus, zinio is pretty rad on the ipad.

Mags like the create review really take the piss with their price/content ratio.
The last time I bought a copy, the content was awful and seemingly out of touch from what I see online. The amount of ads you get, plus the high price is plain cheeky.
- And I don't mean those nicely designed ads that are thrown in because they are nice. I mean shitty ads.kalkal

All of these magazines (Print, How, ID, Communications Arts, etc...) are all on their last leg. Most of these magazines are filled up with crap and are about 80% advertising, their articles usually suck, contain outdated ideas and are no longer relevant.

I like Computer Arts. I also like to have a physical magazine to read while eating in the morning. I don't have a laptop, so it's convenient sometimes.
- i agree. and it pairs nicely with Future Music in my house.prophetone

i canceled all my magazine subscriptions a year and a half ago. mostly 'cause of what's said above. all turning into bad ad space and even the content was just being recycled from issue to issue.
more recently, i've been going to used book shops and finding old design almanacs - there's some great stuff in those for inspiration.

this issue almost looks worth picking up.
2x4, chermayeef&geismar, metahaven, heads of state, jetset...
im guessing metahaven did the cover. http://mthvn.tumblr.com/

I love printed Mags, and I have noticed that the added competition with online has improved the level of design and finishing in many titles. It's great to see more titles use special finishes like foils, Spot varnishing, spot colours etc.
In Australia Desktop magazine has improved lately and Process Journal is a good read and the level of design is pretty good.
I don't subscribe to a lot of magazines, but I do check them out in store and purchase ones I think I'll want to reread in the future.

Only design magazine worth reading still is iDN.

I like the Print regional annual. Try and pick that up each year. Also rally like iDN.

My client launched a printed photography magazine last year and they seem to be doing all right. It is rather boutique but I guess this is how it is going to be with artsy magazines in future, they'll live in niches.

This issue was great. All y'all haters need to recognize interesting design by thinking people. We can't all be Web programmers, Pentagram slaves, and Chermayeff & Geismar wannabees.

i recall quite enjoying 'create online' magazine back in the day (about a decade or so ago)
it was the first mag i'd seen that gave web designers the 'rolling stone' treatment....kind of turned our industry into a scene....which for awhile was kind of fun....especially back in the early days... first one i ever picked up actually had a logo inside for a company i did...which was a shock, seeing as how i live in canada, and the mag was out of the UK.....but after that magazine went bust, and Wired became retarded, i started to notice that all the articles i really wanted to read were on sites like Smashing, and ditto goes for tutorials, etc.....
don't think I've bought a magazine now in a few years...and since most of the design mags i enjoyed were always about 20$ a pop, i don't really miss it either ;)

The publishing industry is obviously hurting, but then you get gems like this. I don't care if its $25 an issue and only comes out quarterly:
It's always beautifully made and always a great read. I like how they even tell you what stock they've and even what families it's set it in. If this is the future of magazines aimed at designers & creatives, it could be much worse :)
- exactly... quality is worth money, and the online reading experience is generally utter shite.Amicus
