I am trying to design an email newsletter for my employer. It's my first time doing this and I'm having a little trouble. I've already downloaded a template and redesigned it in dreamweaver. Now I'm trying to test it. It took me about five hours to realize you could copy and paste it into an email. I tried pasting it into gmail and the layout doesn't look the same. (broken links change of font colors no background images etc...) am I going about this right? I saw there were companies like mail chimp that you could use to test a newsletter and or make a template through a wizard. Please help.

i have done quite a few, but must admit i have never thought of pasting it directly into an email. not even sure what you mean. the whole HTML? or just highlighted bits on the page?
if the latter, then i wouldn't be surprise if things got lost in the transition.
Last time i checked, MailChimp (at least the free account) only allows you to send a few (up to 5?) test emails per campaign. What is your client going to send the campaign through? if they already have chosen a service, then there surely should be a testing facility where you can send newsletter tests to any single/multiple email address(es).
otherwise, the main advise to give is to do all the styling inline and make sure to give all the images "style="display:block;" otherwise you will get weird gaps in hotmail(maybe gmail, can't remember anymore, cause it's been a while since i had that problem).
good luck! newsletters a pain in the ass until you have them figured out.
- I uploaded the html document to a browser then I copied and paste the file into the email message body.Thecreativeone

- Tables (600px max width)
- MailChimp
- Safari (⌘+i) --- opens html in mac mail can send tests that way too.
- Use alt tags for screen readers and if images are not displayed
- subject line, avoid spammy words
