I used to have an HP that would run hot and eventually shut itself down. I used a dirt cheap cooler stand with 3 fans and plenty of holes to help dissipate the heat.
It worked pretty well.
Some of them can be bollocks - Some of them even blow in rather than out! See if you can find one with a bunch of reviews.
The one I used worked well, but it was ugly as fuck and cost a fiver on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-… It was that one.
With a budget of £10-£30 you can get yourself a decent working one that looks good too. I know Belkin and the higher-priced Targus ones have a decent reputation.
- mine doesn't shut down, but the fan starts working overtime with cpu intensive tasks and the machine becomes a but sluggish.sine
- ... sluggish.sine
- CPU getting sluggish tends to lead to heat blackouts.orrinward2

A big problem is that you're using HP. I've had nothing but trouble with them. They just don't seem to consider temperature.
Out of curiosity, what processor does it have?

been looking at the options...
here's the CoolerMaster LapAir:
Belkin has similarly priced coolers, i prefer the CoolSpot Anywhere's design, but not sure about the cooling power:
Targus: Laptop Chill Mat

this seems like the best value for money (and the best looking)i'll decide and order in the next couple of days. at the moment i'm leaning towards the CoolerMaster.
- chill mat best looking Targus design*. not a fan of their products really...sine

My gf runs her Mac Book Pro to do some heavy editing and it gets so hot you can fry eggs on top - i looked into laptop coolers yet all of them ended up being dissatisfactory with amount of air they moved around so i built my own... With 2 powerful fan - it ain't quiet but it moves so much air the laptop barely gets warm:

i've decided to go for the CoolerMaster LapAir:
the main source of heat on my laptopn is at the back, which is also where the airvents and fans are so that design i think suits it perfectly. plus i can order it locally for the equivalent of $25, free delivery. will have it delivered when i'm back at the office next week. will report back.

check out Ergo-tilt on Amazon.uk. Excellent product. They have hundreds of reviews all positive. Also available in North America.

The two images both look like poor choices as they don't have large vents. Chill Mat looks promising however.
Go with whatever, but you're experiencing performance issues and it seems you're choosing the nicest looking solution to a performance problem rather than the most effective.

You definitely get what you pay for. I run a 17" desktop replacement and have had good success with this:
