I would suggest to our conservative guns uber alles posters here to read this interesting bit of history:
http://www.theatlantic.com/magaz…
You know the first gun control laws came form conservatives who wanted to keep automatic weapons out of the hands of the Black Pantehrs, who ironically enough carried loaded rifles into the California state capital building to protest anti-gun legislation. That only sped up the passing of the legislation.
Of course, when Tea Party members carried open guns to an Obama rally - well you see that was "freedom".
You guys are smart enough to suss out the real deal. Unless, you know, you have blinders on or an ideological axe to grind.

Timothy Courtois, who was arrested Sunday, July 22, 2012 on charges of having a concealed weapon and speeding on the Maine Turnpike. Courtois told authorities he was on his way to Derry, N.H., to shoot a former employer. He also said he had attended the Batman movie at the Cinemagic Theater in Saco the previous night. Found in his car were an assault weapon, four handguns and several boxes of ammunition. A search of his home in Biddeford, Maine, revealed several additional guns, including a machine gun, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

antagonlsta,
You keep calling for us to show you stats and sources... we keep giving them to you... and yet you still shout for stats and sources. Is this the twilight zone?
Again... regarding Japan's gun death rate versus the US.
http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearm…
Click Gun Death and Injury
Click Number of Gun Homocideshttp://www.gunpolicy.org/firearm…
Click Gun Death and Injury
Click Number of Gun HomocidesUS has just over double the population of Japan. So double Japan's stats. You'll end up with an approximate of about 80 deaths for Japan, and deaths 9,500 for the US. The difference is appalling.
- First link is Japan, Second link is USA.CanHasQBN
- your source is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Sydney. look up who owns that site.antagonlsta
- plus to use your stats. do you recognize that Japan isnt an indication of the U.S crime stats?antagonlsta
- sure they have less gun crimes but that doesn't mean they have less crime.antagonlsta
- LOL @ you walking around the cold hard stats.CanHasQBN
- so what you're saying is your goal is to just stop GUN crime. here is a DOJ stats for 2009 http://bjs.ojp.usdoj…antagonlsta
- Just a hunch, I bet Japan doesn't even come close to the level of any type of crime the the US has.CanHasQBN
- This thread is a discussion about Gun crime. Not every crime.CanHasQBN
- open your eyes, its not just a gun problem. crime overall is up.antagonlsta
- Wow. You just now want to dance around the gun stats, and now your focus is just on "general crime"...CanHasQBN
- and those are weak "cold hard stats" .. i recognize your data, but not an indication of overall crime rates.antagonlsta
- huh?? This thread is about guns. Are you ignoring the gun stats, and now want to focus on crime as a general idea?...CanHasQBN
- No dude. id like to get to the point. no dance, a flat out HOW. you suggest taking guns away? the problem is the guns are already out there..antagonlsta
- ...That is a whole other discussion. We can talk about robberies, rapes, speeding tickets...CanHasQBN
- tax evasion.CanHasQBN
- the problem is the guns are already out there..antagonlsta
- They were also "already out there" in many countries that have outlawed guns.. and they have seen a drop in gun crimes.CanHasQBN
- crimes.CanHasQBN
- most countries don't have constitutional mandate of gun ownership.antagonlsta
- look. i believe we should have more regulations. but to "take away" isn't a solution.antagonlsta
- No, you see... it IS a solution.CanHasQBN
- You will not attempt it because you assume it isn't achievable, when other countries have shown that it IS achievable.CanHasQBN
- lol. come over my place and try. take my gun away from me,antagonlsta
- If I do, it will take away any sense of perceived manhood you possess. So sad...CanHasQBN
- not really, im open to a old fashioned face beating. tho it will take my ability to hunt.antagonlsta

I saw some dude waiting for the bus this morning with almost the exact same red/orange died hair. I hope he had it done before James Holmes mugshot came out yesterday.

"Mamoru Suzuki of Japan's National Research Institute of Police Science e-mailed us that there were seven gun murders in Japan during 2009." -Tampa Bay Times
- only 7? US is clearly winning.pango
- Whatever. Don't the Japanese just cover up their murders to keep the numbers impressive anyway?monospaced
- lol how many can they cover up? most death are suicide anyway...wait...omg... were they all assisted suicide?!pango
- The police there can cover up as many as they want. It's part of their culture to "save face"monospaced
- Jeez. Haven't you seen the movie, Rising Sun?monospaced
- I read the book.CanHasQBN

"Murders with firearms (most recent) by country"
US: 9,369
Japan: 47 (double for population difference: 90 to 100)
Source: The Eighth United Nations Survey on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (2002) (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention)"Number of Homicides by Firearm"
US: 9,146
Japan: 11 (double for population difference: 20 to 30)
Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/d…You could say it is a cultural thing. Well of course it is. If you grow up in a world constantly telling you that guns are OK and good, you'll want a gun. Some cultures, like Japan, see things differently. We should emulate countries like this. Even during Katrina, Americans looted and shot each other up. While during the Japan quake the Japanese were completely civilized... and Americans were completely dumbfounded at how people could be so civil. Americans are the tantrum-throwing toddlers of the world... discourteous, greedy, selfish.
- goddamn Americans shoot and loot when the Lakers win a championship...monospaced
- First stats are 2002.CanHasQBN
- Are you from the states, CanHasQBN?melq
- I see you are. Just curious of your objectivity based on your final sentence.melq

- If I remember correctly, if you're even in possession of a gun in Japan you will go to jail for a long time.WrappedInBooks
- if you don't like America, you do have the option to leave, no?plash
- You can't leave to stay in another country for more than just a few months. That's called illegal immigration.CanHasQBN
- You need a work visa.CanHasQBN
- I am leaving the US though in a couple of months. Quit my job, sold my car. Am receiving a visa 28 days from now.CanHasQBN
- im not suggesting, just making that statement. you can presume other citizenships.plash

shit, overall crime is going down. no need to legislate, the problem is being addressed. good news canhasqbn, smart people are working on the problem on our behalf. we can go back to our consumption lifestyles.
cit: Crimes and Crime Rates by Type of Offense: 1980 to 2009, Census released 2012
- i found the full data set here: http://www.census.go…plash
- CanHasQBN0
^ All of that data is crime in general. It says nothing about gun use. The words "gun", "firearm", or "weapon" do not even appear anywhere in that document.
- All it says is crime has been decreasing. Which can be for a multitude of reasons.CanHasQBN
- It's probably the vaguest piece of evidence you could produce.CanHasQBN
- can't you see that firearm crimes is a subset the nations overall crime rate? you can't separate them, only focus on it.antagonlsta
- i find your emotional response entertaining, if you care so much, Do Something about itantagonlsta
- I am. I'm leaving this country to live in a place without paranoid people who don't even know their own neighbors.CanHasQBN
