How Japan Virtually Eliminated Shooting Deaths

America's gun control laws are the loosest in the developed world and its rate of gun-related homicide is the highest. Of the world's 23 "rich" countries, the U.S. gun-related murder rate is almost 20 times that of the other 22. With almost one privately owned firearm per person, America's ownership rate is the highest in the world; tribal-conflict-torn Yemen is ranked second, with a rate about half of America's.
But what about the country at the other end of the spectrum? What is the role of guns in Japan, the developed world's least firearm-filled nation and perhaps its strictest controller? In 2008, the U.S. had over 12 thousand firearm-related homicides. All of Japan experienced only 11, fewer than were killed at the Aurora shooting alone. And that was a big year: 2006 saw an astounding two, and when that number jumped to 22 in 2007, it became a national scandal. By comparison, also in 2008, 587 Americans were killed just by guns that had discharged accidentally.
Almost no one in Japan owns a gun. Most kinds are illegal, with onerous restrictions on buying and maintaining the few that are allowed. Even the country's infamous, mafia-like Yakuza tend to forgo guns; the few exceptions tend to become big national news stories.
- "Almost no one" = Cold Hard Science! Give real numbers from real studies, then you may have a point.antagonlsta
- LOL. I think the number of "11" deaths a year is pretty good. You are delusional if you can't see the benefits of gun control.CanHasQBN
- japan = no honor in shooting a man. they still live by the sword. america is teh coward that brings a gun to a knife fight.teh

"But more people are killed by carrrrrrrrrrs!!!!"
And if the gun lobby worked for the auto industry, there would be no seat belts or air bags or speed limits.

If it is presumed that "almost no one" owns a gun in Japan, then it would be impossible to do a study, because the few who do own a gun would be unwilling to admit they do........ because guns are banned.
I also love that you will only believe Baskerville's post "may have a point" if there are real numbers available. What makes you think the below numbers do not hold up??? Look it up for yourself.
"In 2008, the U.S. had over 12 thousand firearm-related homicides. All of Japan experienced only 11, fewer than were killed at the Aurora shooting alone. It seems as though no amount of statistics will convince you that gun control works... even overwhelming numbers like the ones above. I seriously believe you are mentally damaged.
- no it isn't impossibuu. and im not here to prove your stupid point. numbers bro, give numbers.antagonlsta
- There are plenty of numbers in this post, like 12,000 gun homicides in US.... vs 11 gun homicides in Japan.CanHasQBN

when our government needs to set policies, it is best to actually study the field. opinion based bias position isn't good for making any law.
points to note:
The United States already has gun control laws. States also have the ability to add more regulation to those federal mandates.Contact your local congressman or senator and tell him your bullshit plan on removing all firearms in your state.

It should be illegal to even manufacturer guns and other weapons that aren't going directly to the military or law-enforcement. In my opinion.

How is this still up and running?
The site, written as if by Holmes himself, was launched Friday, before many of the victims had even been identified. The frequent posts are intended to shock — they mock the victims of the shooting, and one includes a Photoshopped image of Holmes receiving the Medal of Honor from President Obama.
Now, four days later, the page remains active, despite numerous requests to Facebook to shut it down:

I know a kid in late 20s no real job lives with mom has a compound bow, 2 guns, bunch of paintball guns and play station and a faster car than mine. He "loves" talking guns ammo etc. He can go on-and-on about guns, customizing etc.
People need to realize how many of our youth, 20 somethings have and use guns, bows paintballing etc.
We need to look at our videogames now, paintballing mma etc and wonder why kids are so retarded.

It's fucking ridiculous that the press are still allowed to post their faces, names and all info about them. I believe in free press and all, unless it directly affects a community. For fuck sakes when it comes to extreme sick fucks like this, we are giving them exactly what they want!
These people should be tortured and humiliated for the rest of their lives, and the only info we should know about them is what their screams sound like
