nothing will change unless someone mows down congress and their families with the same weapons that they have been defending.
- Do you not recall what happened in June of this year? https://www.washingt…GM278
- Nothing changed. In fact Trump made it EASIER for mentally ill to purchase firearms.GM278
- oh, yeah forgot about that. sheesh._niko

Kinder eggs are banned, weapons aren't.

LAWN DARTS! I can get an assault rifle easier than lawn darts now. by the way, that was one of my favorite games to play as a kid.
- Gnash2
- Canada sells them everywhere. we're hard cuntsGnash
- Do you think Anti-Fa, Hillary heads and BLM will march on the NRA?robotron3k
- robo, March? Like gather and walk? I could see a peaceful protest happening soon.capn_ron
- Hmmm, I just checked where the headquarters of the NRA is, it's in Fairfax VA. There won't be any protests there, that's for sure.robotron3k
- I cringe every time I see a show, movie, advert whatever where someone has their finger on the trigger when not sighting a target.GM278
- Fairfax VA.... Where at night it's whiter out.severian
- ^ my brother is a ranked pro 9-ball player. he says the same about people playing pool in movies and how they hold the cue.Gnash
- you don't protest to the NRA, do you? You protest near the government that can make change. The NRA is busy with the influx of money right now anyway.capn_ron
- If every black man in the USA bought automatic, AR-15s tomorrow, repubs would change the law by next friday.Gnash
- this is insane. those eggs can make kids fat and kill a dog if the stupid fucking mutt eats one. the defense rifle is obvi protecting that girl.kona
- ^ Great new name for assault rifles. Defense rifle....or freedom rifle......kirshar12
- Gnash, the AR15 is not an automatic. the Automatic version is the M16 (I know semantics) But it's an important distinction.GM278
- and Kirshar12, AR stands for Armalie - the company that developed it. By definition an "Assault rifle" is full automaticGM278
- NOT that I'm suggesting ppl should have AR15's either. Just clarifying.GM278
- ^sorry Armalite not armalie (typo)GM278
- Oh i know, GM. I actually meant assault rifles. I lean toward fully automatic weaponry not being available to the general public.kirshar12
- I have a cousin who owned an AR15 for a while until he realized he had no real reason to own it other than to say he owned an AR15, then he sold it....kirshar12
- RIght on. Just wanted to make the distinction because an AR15 is not full auto and making it so is illegal. Which is how the bump stock loophole came to be.GM278
- like I said in my post below this one I own firearms but no reason to justify an AR15 let alone any military grade weapons.GM278
- thanks for the insight - what I know about weapons I learned from Call of Duty and BattlefieldGnash
- I only have a phaser...pango

In full disclosure, as some of you know from this and other threads, I actually am a licensed gun owner and without going into my life story, former military who was properly trained. Am I all "God alone lets me own my guns?" NO! Do I feel average citizens should be allowed to own high power military grade weapons? NO! I'm actually extremely against it.
While I do believe in having the ability to legally protect my family and my property, I don't believe a semi or automatic rifle accomplishes that end. The fourth rule of gun safety is "Be sure of your target and what is behind it." A 223 round from an AR15 will go through a target and quite possibly the wall behind it. So, unless you want to kill your neighbor, it's a shitty home defense weapon. Furthermore, unless your house is about to be overrun by 30 or more people. you don't need that level of defense.
Most states, including Texas where I live are NOT shoot to kill but shoot to stop the threat. Meaning, IF you shoot someone who is threatening you in a manner that LEGALLY justifies that level of force and they stop, you can't keep shooting until they are dead. That's murder and you will be tried as such. My point is, you don't need a rifle with a 30 round magazine to stop a home invasion. If you think you do, you're probably a lousy shot and should consider not ever touching gun. Especially if you live next door to me.
The second amendment to the US constitution that so many love to hide behind states:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”
Keep in mind this was put into place after America had just fought for it's independence and the forefathers had a legitimate reason to fear tyrannical rule. But we've come a long way since the days of loading black powder into muskets. (Side note: I've actually shot black powder and it's slow and messy business)
One way of interpreting the Amendment is the people have the right to bear arms PERIOD. But to me and I'm sure others there's that first part. "AS A WELL REGULATED MILITIA"
I think that the first step in ANY kind of gun control reform needs to start with that first part of the Amendment. Want to keep your high powered rifles in case of the government gets out of hand? Well then, you need to be serving in a regulated militia. Perhaps that is the first step in changing things that everyone on both sides can get behind.
That's just my two cents on it. This is all heartbreaking to me and it needs to change. Both sides need to get off their asses and come to the table.
- fascinating, thanks ... curious ... would you join the militia?monospaced
- Good question. Probably not.GM278
- I like this idea. Do you think this would neutralize the "My name will be on a gov list" fear?R_Kercz
- If you want to be in said regulated militia then being on a govt list shouldn't be a fear but reason enough.GM278
- A well organized militia will never take down the govt. They have an army. Tanks, jets, missiles, bombs. But have fun thinking that.severian
- ^ exactlyRamanisky2
- I don't think that at all. I am suggesting a modification to the amendment that in doing so regulates who has these kinds of weapons.GM278
- a well organized militia is government run, btw, it's not a grass roots thing, never has been, never will, never intended to bemonospaced
- I agree. I wouldn't expect it to be self regulating. That seems dangerous in itself. I don't profess to think I have the solution to all this.GM278
- But someone needs to start having some ideas that both sides can get behind. This has gone on long enough.GM278
- < I can agree with that and I find the militia angle interesting. It's at least one avenue of adhering to the amendment yet placing some controls on guns.kirshar12
- "I need to legally be able to stockpile enough arms to take down the government that makes it legally possible."cannonball1978

I was born in / spent part of my formative years in Alaska. My dad hunted moose for food, lived in a cabin with no running water, had a substantial collection of firearms. I was raised around guns of all types, from air pistols to assault rifles. They can be neat and fun as long as one is responsible with them. They can also be quite a utility when necessary.
However, even with all of my history with guns and the culture, I can't for the life of me understand why so many are overly concerned with something like a ban on assault weapons.
The second amendment was written in a time not only when guns were less powerful, but states were too. The only logic I can think of is there's a swath of people in America who are thinking to themselves, "If I ever don't get my way, I'll take it out on them with a gun." (I'd bet substantial amounts that plenty of mass shootings occur because of a train of thought similar to this.)
We have moved into an age of information where persistence is the only way to push an ideology - a single mass shooting may have dominated the news even just 20 years ago (I remember watching Columbine on CNN), but now that Americans are normalized to them, guns pose less of an actual threat to the state than they do to just fellow people.
(This also is an aspect of the glaring irony that is most Americans, in that they support the state so long as those who administer it are on "their side" - it's less a model of governance and more a model of children and parents.)
- Why do you think other, previous, more popular administrations, didn't do anything about it when they had the opportunity???robotron3k
- ^ Opportunity fucking LOLRamanisky2
- because irrational gun lovers think god gave them the right to own devices of mass killing, and they have powerful lobbyists behind them to kill political careemonospaced
- it's not that complicated ... even an asshole like you knows how that swampy mess works, politicallymonospaced
- Perhaps Obama's tears kept the swamp swampy through 14+ mass shootings during his reign...robotron3k

Governments arm the police and the military with every kind of weapon - while at the same time depriving citizens of the basic means of defending themselves.
Are you so afraid? That you'll give up your rights in the hope that your government will keep you safe?
