NRA wants armed guards in schools...didn't see that coming! Nice. More guns to defend against the guns we've already lobbied hard to have out there. Wasn't there an armed guard at Columbine? I seem to recall a guard engaging one of the shooters. If so, that worked...not.
- some parts of the country they actually used to take guns to school. old days. so think something new ingoranousyurimon

A Timeline Of Mass Shootings In The US Since Columbine

I am not alway agree with the mayor, but I am with him on this one:
The NRA's Washington leadership has long been out of step with its members, and never has that been so apparent as this morning. Their press conference was a shameful evasion of the crisis facing our country. Instead of offering solutions to a problem they have helped create, they offered a paranoid, dystopian vision of a more dangerous and violent America where everyone is armed and no place is safe.
- I dont see this exactly as the big crisis. Bigger crisis is the police state first then lets talk about these issues.yurimon
- if you care more about lives saved then there are other things that contribute to death of americans then guns x100yurimon
- Police state? Oh lord, you're one of those.severian

So, yuri and the NRA posit, a good way to keep schools safe is to station armed guards there. Ok.
But workplace shooting are just as common. So i suppose each workplace of a certain size or bigger needs them too.
And heck, while we're at it, the guy in PA today was running down a rural road shooting people. So we'd need armed guards in every town as well.So to some it all up, we need to keep our guns to protect against the coming police state. And since we need to keep our guns, the only way to keep people safe is to turn everywhere into a police state.

DON'T FORGET:
(says the NRA) Any respectable and responsible gun owner keeps their guns locked in a safe in their home so that children don't get to them.
Why they don't see the failed logic here I'll never understand.

"yurimon,"
How does it feel to be part of a hopeless minority, who's puritanical philosophies are fated to backslide into mere historical anecdote?
The country's moving on. Your only solace can be found among small pockets of like-minded yearners for an idealized past .

Why can't people understand that most gun owners are responsible? The percentage of gun owners committing crimes with their guns is less than 1/5 of 1%.
maybe you'd be just as adamant against more things if the news over covered smoking deaths, car deaths, darwin deaths etc.
- We don't understand the need you have to own semi-automatic firearms.hereswhatidid
- I agree albums, thats why above I stated the charts were useless. They dont take into account total population and percentages based on amount of guns owned. Along with many more other comparisons.whhipp

albums,
Smoking is someone's personal choice. How you can compare smoking with a person putting a bullet into another person's head is fucking stupid.
Cars are needed for transportation, and have a multitude of safety features to keep people from dying. That is just a risk people take every time they step into a car and they know that there is a risk. And the only reason there are more car deaths is because MANY more people drive than use a gun on a daily basis. An enormous amount of people drive. How many use a gun every day??
Your comparisons are tired. Same old shit.. "ban cars" blah blah blah.
Please explain why one needs a 100-round mag.

- Paranoia is not freedom.CanHasQBN

@albums
What exactly does "responsible" entail? The people crying "More guns will make the world safer" must understand that that would require more people walking around with them. But, to be responsible, they would have to keep them locked up. It just doesn't make a lot of sense.
- I'm not one that says more guns = safer.albums
- I know, I was just asking about the "responsible" part from your comment two posts up.monospaced

Second hand smoke around children is a choice?
Transportation shouldn't kill, it should transport. Too many innocent victims. Besides, it's a luxury not a need
To me it makes sense that guns kill, it's what they do.
I don't want a 100 round clip, but my semi-automatic taurus 24/7 pro handgun of the year 2 years in a row should not be taken away just because some people are scared of bullets.
the only thing i support is making it harder to own assault rifles, not illegal. I've already registered my gun along with a spent round and casing for ballistics purposes in my name. If my gun ever commits a crime, the cops will know my gun did it.
Taking away the rights of the innocent because of the action of criminals is not wise legislation.
- "Transportation shouldn't kill, it should transport" ergo. guns should kill they shouldn't simply shoot.chossy
- albums it is not that a crime is committed using your gun and that it can be traced back to you.chossy
- it is that a crime is committed in the first place. no gun, no crime simple.chossy
- And you have galvanised peoples fears by typing this To me it makes sense that guns kill, it's what they do."chossy
- So why have one? to kill? I mean it makes sense to you right it's what they do.chossy
- CanHasQBN0
How many people are dying from second hand smoke? Get a grip man. You're grabbing at anything and everything to try to salvage your position.
Transportation is a need. People need to be transported to go to work. In most cities in America you MUST have a car in order to function.
Taking away the lives of the innocent because of the legislation of the criminals is not a wise action.
- i don't need to salvage my position, I'm illustrating you're vilifying guns, not saving lives.albums
- Actually, statistical evidence has already proven that banning guns saves lives.CanHasQBN
- umm what statistics? and I bet the jews arent a part of the numbers dead... along with countless others exterminated by rogue governments.whhipp
- by rogue governments that banned their weapons prior.whhipp

To answer the NRA armed guard request criticism some of you have:
Would it help you if there already is Armed guard presence in schools already prior to this incident... Would it also help you if it was decision made in a liberal city like NYC, dept of school safety NYPD. there has been armed presence in nyc school system for the longest time. some of you cant think passed context of labels. So if bloomberg made the announcement it would be ok?
- Fax_Benson0
albums, I think most people accept that the vast majority of gun owners are responsible. (ignoring the fact that when responsible people go bad, the last thing you want them to have access to is a load of guns). If they were all already nuts, there'd be nobody left alive by now.
Things have been done to reduce the numbers of smoking deaths - negative advertising, public smoking bans, tax increases and the like.
Things have been done to make cars safer - speed limits, seat-belt laws, drink-driving laws, air-bags etc. Not to mention driving lessons and practical and theory driving tests (in the UK, not sure about the US).
People are merely suggesting that similar measures might be a sensible option to consider when looking for ways to reduce the number of innocent people killed by guns.
- I'm all for education, I've said that for years here. I don't like hearing my semi-auto should be bannedalbums
- I even stated above, it should be harder to acquire, not illegal.albums
- I didn't like hearing that my right to smoke in a pub was being taken away, but it was, and it was the right decision, especially for the innocent non-smoking patrons and bar staff.Fax_Benson

Ok, so let's go with your plan and put armed guards at all our schools. What about the movie theaters? What about the malls? The restaurants? Should every space we occupy have armed men in it? Are you proposing we turn fully into a police state?
Fuck man, even if there were armed guards at a school... schools are huge. What on Earth makes you assume the guard is going to be at the exact location the murderer is at? The shooter would still take out 20-30 people before the guard figured out what was going on and got to the scene.
How many guards do you want? One guard for every classroom? Cute..
- If there is an increase of psychiatric drug use then you will need to do this. keep avoiding..yurimon
- So your solution in response to the increase of crazy people out there is to make guns more easy accessible. Wow.CanHasQBN
- Just think about that for a second, and realize how ass-backwards your thinking is.CanHasQBN
- keep avoiding the issue see how it helps. Id say go after drug companies on this first.yurimon
- Um, here's a thought.. what if someone's deranged to start out with? And it had nothing to do with meds...CanHasQBN
