i've hated 'em all my life but have recently discovered my tastes turning toward this drink. would love to master it and be able to make the perfect mary.

I had one that used Absolut Peppar a while back when I was visiting Prague - gave it a nice extra kick.
Similarly, I've had a couple made with tequila/jalapeño infused tequila that were a pretty nice twist on the usual.

Look up a New Orleans style recipe. They use cajun spices and usually use an ocra. I saw one place that infused their vodka with jalapeno peppers. I nearly wept.
Also the bartender at JFK makes a great one.

My grandfather used to scrape a beef bouillon cube over the top... just a dusting. Good stuff

tabasco & black pepper to taste
dash of worcestershire sauce

One of the best ones I've had tasted/looked like it had pickling spices floating around in it (rye seed, mustard seed, coriander seed) on top of the standard black pepper and spice, perhaps to flavor the vodka.

i just read about one made with absinthe instead of vodka, called a "red fairy". should be called the "bloody awful", 'cause that sounds disgusting.
right up there with my newest creation, which i call the "toothpaste screwdriver"
