- Not sure what's worse the product itself or youtube being flooded with tubers falling over themselves to find something to say about it, without even trying it.shapesalad

Sounds cynical. Complaining about a battery pack.
In uni we'd do class projects, create video installations using flash or director (yea that long ago) - super rudimentary motion tracking + projection mapping stuff. It blew our minds on where the future was going and not once did we complain about the bulky G4 towers, the shitty 480p cameras and projectors, and everything cabled together.
Sometimes I gotta throwback and remember what it was like back then to enjoy gadgets and crazy new tech...
Sucks that the apple goggles are insanely expensive, but it's also cool to see one of the worlds biggest companies do something so nerdy.
Also on the price, it'll come down in a few years. But not sure by how much, as it makes sense considering it's a full blown M2 computer + the lenses, sensors, cameras and high-res 4k screens in one.
- I would hazard a guess that the required hardware will reduce as the software improves. A bit like how Tesla removed radar, and went to a visual system.slappy
- They will always be silly expensive, but it's a luxury brand. There will be an android version along in a minute and or a consumer ms hololens.slappy
- Maybe we don't need to be stuck in a VR/AR headset for more than two hours at a time. Can you plug it into the mains?Ianbolton

Utopian's going to need to update his stock response to:
Innovation you can see, hear, and feel.

- The UI makes the Quest's UI looks like a hellscape of indecision.mg33
- Apple gonna Apple.
Pretty slick.ideaist - This is actually cool. Not the Metaverse crapNBQ00
- i like how they blend the digital and physical world. This has some potential. Still shitty you are stuck with a cable.milfhunter
- Where does the cable go?shapesalad
- ^ battery pack on your belt. I'm sure Apple will sell battery belts in different colors.mg33

- is the lens, trim, strap, cord, plug, extension, battery pack, case, cloth to clean, and software to use all extra monthly subscription costs?whatthefunk
- Well it was better than Zuckerberg's Metaverse presentation. But lol @ the price...I guess this will be a niche product for some time.yuekit

- 10 years too late? lol. none of that tech was around 10 years agointeliboy
- lol.. nope.autoflavour
- Didn’t Google already try this with Google glass? Those at least looked like regular glasses but people still freaked out_niko
- Apple has a lot of trust with its customers, warranted or not. Not many other brands have this (try getting support from Google or a 1 on 1 demo of metaverse).slappy
- I'll wait for the Vision Airok_not_ok
- Google Glass was the Vision Air.palimpsest
- That cushioning is going to get sweaty and grubby really quickly.shapesalad
- ^VR/AR wasn't around 10 years ago? You're correct, Google Glass was out 9 years ago. My bad.formed
- More like Vision ProN - capitalizing off that adult marketplace legitimizing new tech - will likely blow everyone away with nsfw experiences, email not so muchwhatthefunk
- Saying apple is late as if it had any cache is silly. They’re always late and almost always set the standard.monospaced
- thousands of people worked on this for years and it, somehow, didn't get leaked. Apple runs a very tight shiphotroddy

- This entire product is meant to produce and consume porn.jmckinno
- Novelty product. Some of the tech in it will feed through into more 'consumable' products over the next few years... supply chains all being well.shapesalad

- Dude looks like a complete dBag.utopian
- It supports a dualsense controller but only runs apple arcade games. I’d order one now if i knew for sure it would support steamVRscarabin
- They’re really trying to position it as a non-gaming device but when will they learn nobody wants to put on a helmet to check their mail?scarabin
- lol shape, novelty?monospaced
- Scarabin, I'm sure there'll be a native steam app for it in future. Until then you can just hook up a Mac.NBQ00

I am really curious to see how it works and I want to try it in real life, but I am definitely not interested in owning one
Discuss
- The thought of our future being in headsets is depressing as fuck but I'd really love to try these out and probably own them if I was a bit wealthier.HAYZ1LLLA
- I have 0.0000098% interest in this product.utopian
- can we all please discuss whether drgs is interested in owning one or not? I personally think he should get one.Ianbolton
- I'd love to try this out too. I have a Quest 2 that my company gave me and it's been collecting dust for months.mg33
- Not sure I'd want to own one (I can think of dozens of things I'd buy instead at that price) but what they've made is impressive as hell.mg33

For how long can you wear a VR headset before it gets sweaty and cuts off blood circulation to your face?
Would you wear it to watch a movie at home, say 2 hours?Discuss

Instructions not clear. The CPU, RAM and all the computer parts are inside the glasses, or you use them as an accessory with your laptop?
- Inside glasses. But you can hook up Mac (OS) if you want to run the Macos desktop apps.NBQ00
- Can I play games on my PC with themdrgs
- inside glasses, in front of your eyes. The eyes you see appear to be a display screen, likely displaying your deepfake facetime doppleganger's eyes.monNom

NYT article from a couple months ago...apparently some people at Apple had doubts about the headset...
- "It is considered a bridge to a future product, such as augmented reality glasses, that would have broader appeal but require technical breakthroughs"yuekit
- yeah, that's what is odd, Apple normally wait until the tech is there to do it properly. I guess there's some interesting software aspects though.fadein11
- ^ I guess like the Apple Watch, let the product simmer a while until it catches oninteliboy
- They mention the Tesla model of letting the high end early adopters buy in first, then expanding to mass market over time.yuekit
- Everyone wants in on spacial computing as it is the next platform. The problem is its incredibly hard, and farther out than investor types want to hearrobotinc
- I think it's a real question whether this is a product consumers want in the first place.yuekit

ok so legit hardware question
my 2013 MBP is dying to the point where i can use it but can't always rely on it to not die when it is in sleep mode. it's been 10 years and has served me well.
now i don't use laptops the way i used to - i don't work 50 hour weeks on design anymore, but i do personal projects (books primarily, also web / photo work) that require some power. i primarily use the affinity suite for this.
i also do sound art, but most production is in audacity, which is fairly lightweight as well.
so this all being said - what would the votes be for a new laptop investment between the new 15" air against a new MBP? there is a $1000 difference between what i would spec out each as, so i am leaning towards the air.
- An Apple Silicon Air with full RAM will run circles around what you've got now, with less heat and better battery life. It's feasible for sure.evilpeacock
- In our studio we use M1 Macbook Pros for the designers and M1 Macbook Airs for the account managers. Although they should be similar performance on paper..slappy
- Airs struggle with some of the design files (heat management?). Also with both, the RAM is the weakest link, I would get 32gb+ as that still bonks out sometimesslappy
- @slappy, that's what i've heard the main difference is - the fan / heat mgmt in the pro. i'm not worried about it now, but long term could be a factorcolin_s
- A Pro is a safer longterm investment, and yes get as much RAM as you can; AS still only needs 1/2 what Intel does.evilpeacock
