Pixels = Pts?

In Illustrator, I converted "Points" to "Pixels" under type units, and the sizes all stayed the same but with different unit names.
This site says pixels are not equal to point size?:
http://reeddesign.co.uk/test/poi…How many em's and pixels is 10 pt type in Illustrator?

Interesting... interesting. May I suggest, you do some research on what the em measurement actually is and how it is derived.

no

I was confused about the Pixel to Point calculation.

if the document is 72dpi then 1px = 1pt, as there are 72 pts in an inch. If your document is 150dpi, a point is not equal to pixel anymore.
- ETM0
Why are you making the calculation? Are you designing for online or print?
In the ideal and accepted 'standard' for digital, a point is equal to 1/72 of an inch. 0.75points to a pixel. But really, there are so many factors that can affect that.

both points and DPI are relative values, pixels are a consistent units, but have nothing to do with real world sizes as they have no set dimension.

I am designing for web and http://www.typetester.org/ only has ems.
- Well an EM is a relative measurement, based on the font and the base size.ETM
- That's why I suggested you do some research.ETM
- You may notice type tester does ask you both font and base size. For CSS the baseline font size is 16px.ETM
- 16px has become the accepted standard baseline, but there is no rule.ETM

Desktop publishing in the early days settled on 72 points to an inch. Traditionally in print 1/72.27 makes a point. The older french definition was similar but with slightly accepted variation (machining error I guess).
At the end of the day, it's a print measurement, so if you're doing online, use a more appropriate measurement.

I have the number 72.009 in my head. Might be relevant, might not. Ooh, the mystery!

Illustrator isn't changing anything when I convert pt to px in Units.
If I want the type to be 12px in the final site, I should make it 9pt in Illustrator?
- monospaced0
If you want it 12 px then set it to 12 px!
- omahadesigns0
^ I am so confused. 12pt is different from 12px when I try it in Dreamweaver, but the same when I do it in Illustrator.

Which do I follow and what do I tell the programmer?

Illustrator to design for web? Why not PhotoShop? You know, work 1:1 so you can see what will be seen online as you build it. Besides, it sounds like you're using a print document as your working space.
- Photoshop is not a design program.omahadesigns
- Sure it is, depends on how you use it.monospaced
- Interesting... interesting. PhotoShop is not a design program.ETM
- No, it's a photo editing program or rendering program. Not a program to use type and layouts.omahadesigns
- is 'design' exclusively typing on layouts? that seems a bit narrow.monNom
- When you learn the basics of web design then you can tell us what is NOT a design program.zarkonite
- what? did you just enter into design. designing interactive in illustrator is like editing audio in Final cut pro.lvl_13

Use Fireworks, pretty much best of both worlds

Don't get so hung up on 12px and 12pt. Use Illustrator, set the page size to something realistic, and design 1:1. If it looks good, then send it out. Let the developer fuck with the type size to match your layout.
Also, when you switch a Photoshop image from inches to centimeters it doesn't change the image, just like pixels to points, it just changes the measurement only. You can set Illustrator to measure type in pixels and be done.
- This is cockhat advice. "Just push the final decision on the developer". Fuck designers like that.albums
- Well, he seems absolutely clueless. But read my last paragraph and sentence.monospaced
- Anyway, a good developer can build a layout from a file without the designer saying: this is 12px typemonospaced
- A good developer wouldn't fuck with something not finished.albums
- Why you gotta be so mean?monospaced
- gotta be outa love.i_was
- i always deliver illy files, developers know what to do. if i want a 12px font on the web set it to 12 fucking pixels fucking christdoesnotexist

Please tell me that you are not designing webpages in Illustrator.
- this is all i do, far superior imo, but depends on how you work.doesnotexist
- Please tell me you don't design anything in photoshop.omahadesigns
- Illustrator is for: illustrations, logos, etc... Not web design and desktop publishing!utopian
- so i can only use a pencil for writing? not drawing? shit.doesnotexist

- There are NOT 72 pixels per inch, I'm sorry. :(monospaced
- if it's 72 dpi there is. if it's 300 dpi then there are 5000 pixels per inch.mantrakid
- 5000?? Hmm... that will make for some biiiiiiig files.ETM
- 72.27pt/in isn't about resolution. You might as well be saying 500 centimetres per metre.i_monk
