I'll never take advice from from Mr Stupid Questions, aka omahadesigns. In fact, according to him, I'll need to contact all the studios I code for in LA to inform them I can no longer accept .psds and that they should immediately stop preparing them for production. We'll just have to figure out something else as we cry over all those jobs we've already completed with them using PhotoShop... Dipshit.

Illustrator isn't changing anything when I convert pt to px in Units.
If I want the type to be 12px in the final site, I should make it 9pt in Illustrator?
- monospaced0
If you want it 12 px then set it to 12 px!
- omahadesigns0
^ I am so confused. 12pt is different from 12px when I try it in Dreamweaver, but the same when I do it in Illustrator.

Which do I follow and what do I tell the programmer?

Illustrator to design for web? Why not PhotoShop? You know, work 1:1 so you can see what will be seen online as you build it. Besides, it sounds like you're using a print document as your working space.
- Photoshop is not a design program.omahadesigns
- Sure it is, depends on how you use it.monospaced
- Interesting... interesting. PhotoShop is not a design program.ETM
- No, it's a photo editing program or rendering program. Not a program to use type and layouts.omahadesigns
- is 'design' exclusively typing on layouts? that seems a bit narrow.monNom
- When you learn the basics of web design then you can tell us what is NOT a design program.zarkonite
- what? did you just enter into design. designing interactive in illustrator is like editing audio in Final cut pro.lvl_13

Use Fireworks, pretty much best of both worlds

Don't get so hung up on 12px and 12pt. Use Illustrator, set the page size to something realistic, and design 1:1. If it looks good, then send it out. Let the developer fuck with the type size to match your layout.
Also, when you switch a Photoshop image from inches to centimeters it doesn't change the image, just like pixels to points, it just changes the measurement only. You can set Illustrator to measure type in pixels and be done.
- This is cockhat advice. "Just push the final decision on the developer". Fuck designers like that.albums
- Well, he seems absolutely clueless. But read my last paragraph and sentence.monospaced
- Anyway, a good developer can build a layout from a file without the designer saying: this is 12px typemonospaced
- A good developer wouldn't fuck with something not finished.albums
- Why you gotta be so mean?monospaced
- gotta be outa love.i_was
- i always deliver illy files, developers know what to do. if i want a 12px font on the web set it to 12 fucking pixels fucking christdoesnotexist

- You don't like?omahadesigns
- its fine i guess, but i certainly wouldnt bill a client for a site like that.mantrakid

Production files should be PS, but the actual design process is a nightmare in PS. Who can design like that? You don't design anything else in PS, why should you design a website? It's built for editing photos.
- you're a dipshit who is in no place to offer guidance to professionalsalbums
- lvl_130
maybe in the first few early iterations of PS. it is worlds above where it started. if you are designing for web using Illustrator or especially InDesign, you are doing it wrong. plain and simple.
this shit makes me laugh.
- are we being trolled here? seriously, wtf.lvl_13
- omfgmonospaced
- absolutely we are - look at the website, it's hilarious.

Fuck it, I am going to use InDesign to create logos and Illustrator to publish brochures and catalogs moving forward!
- utopian0
Please tell me that you are not designing webpages in Illustrator.
- this is all i do, far superior imo, but depends on how you work.doesnotexist
- Please tell me you don't design anything in photoshop.omahadesigns
- Illustrator is for: illustrations, logos, etc... Not web design and desktop publishing!utopian
- so i can only use a pencil for writing? not drawing? shit.doesnotexist

Yep. I just did my latest site design 100% in InDesign. I then screen captured it and dropped the image in a table. It looks slick. The only downside is that each page is around 22mb and Google doesn't seem to see any of my content. I am particularly proud that it seems to render the same in all browsers. Also, has anyone heard when the next upgrade for Netscape was due?
- With all respect, you need to take another hard look at InDesign, my friend, and maybe rethink that statement.monospaced
- Also, omahadesigns seemed to have just punk'd usmonospaced
- i_monk0
- There are NOT 72 pixels per inch, I'm sorry. :(monospaced
- if it's 72 dpi there is. if it's 300 dpi then there are 5000 pixels per inch.mantrakid
- 5000?? Hmm... that will make for some biiiiiiig files.ETM
- 72.27pt/in isn't about resolution. You might as well be saying 500 centimetres per metre.i_monk

If only Adobe had a hybrid program that does pages and type like Indesign, logo capabilities like Illustrator and pixel precision of PS. That would be the ideal web program.
