.. and then realised they don't get enough money. So they became a designer instead... all the while wishing they were an artist.

I honestly don't see the difference... being able to do art is all that counts, even if its for clients who may be oddball.....
I count myself lucky, I could be sitting in a cube full of drones with red staplers working for Almagated Consolidated Incorporated doing mind-numbing randomness but instead I get to do what I like with my life... and of course, I have to pay bills, but the ever popular tortured artist effect only works if you are a trust fund baby....

I did too.
Went to art school, like the logic and thoughtfulness of graphic design so pursued that as the fine art department was super pretentious.
Design is the commercial arm of art/communication, so I don't mind. It solving other people's problems which I enjoy.Art is selfish, it's generally all about yourself. I do still draw/paint in my spare time as a hobby. But I do it for the love of it, not to make money.
I find that trying to make money from something usually take all the enjoyment out of it. But graphic design was always a commercial pursuit so it doesn't grate so much doing it for a living.

Do people who wanted to become artists ever design apps?
Are former artists more likely to do print?
