Testing the ‘Apple tax’: What would it cost to build a Windows version of the new Mac Pro?

Turns out the CPUs are user-upgradeable.

All fun and games until someone mistakes it for a coffee cup

Thorough review of the mac pro:

Intrepid modder builds “Hackintosh” Mac Pro replica inside a real trashcan
http://arstechnica.com/apple/201…- timeline, and it's not even as fast as a mid-level iMacmonospaced
- "It goes without saying that this machine's performance will come nowhere near that of a fully decked-out Mac Pro."monospaced
- what sort of trash can is that anyway? if it was a pedal bin or sthg it would have at least been funny.kingsteven

- I use a Z420 from 2012/13 at work, with a Quadro and 128GB of ram. The thing is (still) a fucking beast. Bombproof as hell, it can render, full tilt, for days.face_melter
- I'm considering selling my Mac pro trashcan, been doing a lot of 4k video lately, editing and grading is great, composting & animation though sucksmoldero
- Man, that things hideousdorkKn1ght
- Who gives a shit what it looks like? It's a tool that sits under the desk out of sight. The only time you look at it is when you press the power button.face_melter

i have used mac all my life but i think i am getting a pc pretty soon. Apple seems to be interested only in making phones and dont really cater to us any more..... time to move on i say
- iMac is good machine, so is the MBproGnash
- I agree completely, but what do you move on to? Do I roll the dice and hope to see a desktop refresh in 2016, or get something else?noneck

- iMac are good fucking computers IMHO. Only needed 2 in 13 years of my business.HAYZ1LLLA
- What about Mac Pros? I have one at work and it's fantastic but I wonder if Apple can compete with upgrades every few years. It used to be much more often.CyBrainX
- agreed. I love OS X but Apple really couldn't give a shit about pro users anymore.inteliboy
- It's not the computer man. You suck.OSFA
- To be honest 'Pro' users who need masses of RAM and CPU power for 3D or Video work would be nuts buying a high-end mac. Apple can't compete.HAYZ1LLLA

Honestly, if you're doing video, heavy 3d, etc, I don't know why anyone would consider a Mac. Build your own super-pc, and run Windows.
Even though I hate Windows Os, I wouldn't think twice for video / 3d. I run it for games, because it's the only real option.

Do they even still update mac pros?
- Not for three years. One can use the Thunderbolt breakout options to extend the "trash can". I still run a hot-rodded 2010 "cheese grater" just fine 'tho.evilpeacock
- Sites like this have a lot of info on what you can do with the trashcan or tower Mac Pros even now: http://barefeats.com…evilpeacock
- I also maxxed out my cmp but every once in a while my cards peace out and crash the system lol.dorkKn1ght
