Just booked tickets for a trip out May 17-21. Not sure if I should ask for recommendations, or just get lost in the city. Only items on the list are Empire State Building, MOMA and visiting friends in Brooklyn. What do you NY peeps do for fun on the other coast?
- Friend told me their roads are better maintained and smoother than ours here in SoCal. Please confirm.HijoDMaite
- It's more about areas to avoid than it is areas to seek out. Once you eliminate all the tourist crap areas, etc, you're left with some good stuff :)monospaced
- If you wanna meet up, I'll be around on parental leave, drop me a line. You have my contact info I believe.monospaced
- i'll check Hijo and report back. mono, i was planning on hitting you up. We want to do a couple tourist things, but not just that. For sure no times square.capn_ron
- May should be a good time to take in the Whitney Museum, then stroll along the high line. When you get hot there’s an outdoor cafe with a nice frozé to cool offbulletfactory
- Vintage shopping for men & women: 28 Scott in Bushwick is a must when I'm in town. Very affordable and excellent curation.shellie
- Dokebi in Brooklyn is one of the many places i like to eat. In west village, Saigon Shack it's right by the West 4 train stop a bunch of trains run through.shellie
- Must see music: Friday nights @ Skinny Dennis for blues/country or Williamsburg Jazz Center open mic. Sunday evening killer jazz at Basik in Williamsburg!robotron3k
- In Bushwick, great comedy/karaoke Friday nights at Cobra Club. $2 Lions head around the corner at The Johnsons. Gotta check out The Keep bar, very unique!robotron3k
- oh nice! music would be a great night. thanks for the recs everyone. I'll be bumping this as the time gets closer.capn_ron
- I always drag out-of-towners to the Circle Line boat tour around Manhattan. It's an architectural and cultural history lesson; on the water; you can drink.MrAbominable
- Roads can be nicer (assuming you're referring to riding). They get pretty shredded after all the plowing during the winters then repaved throughout the yearduckseason

Hey QBN NY peeps.
I'm heading out to NY with misses in Oct (she doesnt know and hopefully has no idea what QBN is) and I was wondering if any locals had any recommendations on nice restaurant for special meal. Somewhere with some wow factor and good food? (finding out early so can reserve table - if good restaurants in NY are anything like in London you need to book months in advance)
Cheers y'all (as they say in NY... or so I hear... maybe only in movies)
- Depends on the type of food you're looking for. Here are a handfulbulletfactory
- https://www.elevenma…
https://www.thomaske…
https://ko.momofuku.…bulletfactory - +1 for Koduckseason
- If you find yourself in Prospect Heights in BK I'd recommend Olmsted. Not much wow factor in terms of the space but the food is great.duckseason

Tell me about living in NYC.
How much to live comfortably not wealthy? Entertainment, excercise, food, travel, etc. What to expect, what wears people down, what to avoid?
May have a job opportunity there.
- i thought that place has too many leftist commies, eco terrorist feminist. for you :/pango
- Probably does. I will turn NYC into a conservative firebrand.Hayoth
- $180k plus some benefits (only half sarcastic)monospaced
- Everything you want and need is nearby, at all times. The money you won’t spend on a car is spent on creature comforts and weeknight entertainment.monospaced
- If you are a right winger go to staten island and you will feel at homedocpoz
- Seriously 180g?Hayoth
- Breakdown costs, rent, electricity, travel, entertainment, internet, subway?Hayoth
- It was a half inside joke, but not far off.monospaced
- Rent is $2k a month min. If you want something comfortable, you’ll spend closer to $4-5k+ at least. Everything else is 25% more than elsewhere.monospaced
- Bills are standard and some utilities are included in rent even. Groceries are very expensive, but restaurants are quality. A night out is $100-200 dependingmonospaced
- your first mistake is "comfortably". People who live comfortably live elsewhere. Well-off people in NYC have wealth.MrAbominable
- Having a car and parking in Manhattan isn’t worth the trouble or costs. Subway rides are $2.50+ now! Monthly is a lot but good if you use it daily.monospaced
- if i were to do it all over again... i'd move here with just a suitcase and sublet/roommate in a few neighborhoods the first year before moving your stuff in.MrAbominable
- Before i decided to move back to LA, the only apt I found that I liked was $3300 and 1 block away from serious projects in bedstuy.shellie
- It's honestly easier with roommates if you don't want to spent 2k+ for a closet sized studio. Then ur talking 1k per room. Take 2 rooms, have an den/ office.shellie
- Places like Harlem, you can get a larger master bedroom. Places like LES, Chelsea are really loud. I stayed at the Hotel Chelsea for 8 months.shellie
- I prefer to house swap LA for N.Y. on off season, deep winter and hottest of summer & I usually get amazing places that way. The permanent move didn't work 4 meshellie
- depends on where you want to live Hayoth - there are ways to keep costs low if you look & have patience. btw there are a ton of foodcoops +farmermarkets ifnotype
- you're in to that.notype
- A lot of solid/accurate info above. I'll ad my 2¢: Studio/1BR will go for about $2k. As mentioned you can get more value if you get a 2BR+ with a roommate(s)duckseason
- Also, you can get a bit more for your money if you move away from the city into certain neighborhoods in Queens, BK, or the Bronx (or even NJ...).duckseason
- Drinks: $6-7 for a beer, $12-15 for cocktails. $13 for a film ticket. Gym will vary greatly depending on where you sign up - $20-100/mo+.duckseason
- Food can be as cheap or as expensive as you want, really. Traveling locally means you have to rent a car (unless you're going somewhere by bus/train)duckseason
- Cheapest car rentals are at the airports and will cost around $300 for a weekend. Bus will be around $40, train varies but can get pretty expensive.duckseason
- I loved living in NYC (15 years) but am happy to be out. What wore me down was the weather, cost (housing specifically), it's quite a dirty city...duckseason
- ...there's trash everywhere. This was most noticeable upon returning from other cities. People are/can be shit - not everyone, but just takes that one person...duckseason
- ...causing shit on a crowded train in the morning to start the day off on the wrong foot...duckseason
- Save some money by getting a bike - NYC is pretty flat and easy to get around + a great way to get to know they city. Get a good lock...duckseason
- ... and/or avoid leaving outside if possible. NYC is an amazing place, but definitely not for everyone.duckseason
- Hayoth, do it! I was born and raised here... and still falling more and more in love w/ it (and the ppl here) every day.notype
- like duckseason said, it's not for everyone, and to you Hayoth, it'd just be a massive liberal safe space where everyone is successful and not bigots.monospaced
- You would despise every moment, and every person, since you disagree with their opinions. You would be in a constant triggered state. NYC is not for you.monospaced
- $185k sounds high but if you pay rent it might not be that crazy. I'm lucky to own so I'm not a typical case.CyBrainX
- I guess I was the last person to respond three years ago. I would also highly recommend using a bike. You'll save more than $1000/yr, get exercise and be less..CyBrainX
- frustrated than using mass transit. Cars are an absurdity. Even if it gets stolen, you're still better off.CyBrainX

Headed there myself for Memorial Day weekend. My wife is at a conference the 23rd and 24th, flying there on the 24th and staying with her in Manhattan, then we're staying in Williamsburg Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. Never been to Brooklyn and have only been to NYC in 2001. Really looking forward to it. We need a vacation away from our kids and have been wanting to go there for several years now.
- Williamsburg has blown up, for better or worse, since 2001- a lot of solid bar and restaurant choices in and around the area.duckseason
- Don't be afraid to venture into different areas in BK - Bushwick and Greenpoint are closest, but Bed Stuy, Crown/Prospect Heights are a short trip away.duckseason
- All have numerous things to do/see/eat/drink.duckseason
- dee-dubs1
Heading to NY this weekend, any good exhibitions or galleries (street art ISH) on at the moment I should check out while I'm there?

I'm visiting my brother this weekend in the city and we're looking for something to do. He's super lame and doesn't know anything cool going on. He suggested the NEW MALL.
...anybody got ideas of cool new stuff to check out in the city? It will be raining apparently.
- Oh my god that mall is 1000% lamenb
- It is the equivalent of a high-end airport mall. Seriously.nb
- Park Bar just reopened.utopian
- lol, utopian are you still bitter for being left out?monospaced
- Park...cannonball1978
- Go to a show at comedy cellar. Walk around the west village and grab drinks and snacks here and there. Enjoy the high line park. Hear jazz at union squaremonospaced
- Find a place where you can support a local band or something, or at least some local businesses. That’s what I would do. Think it’s gonna rain thomonospaced
- I love Project Parlor in Brooklyn. https://instagram.co…
Great outdoor area too. I used to DJ there when I lived in New York.shellie - Staten Island Ferry... jkSimonFFM
- The old mall.shapesalad
- Not bitter at all. It's just every time someone on QBN mentions NYC, I think of Park Bar and an overrated and filthy city.utopian
- Plus the fact that I know that you will personally respond to my comment in some way or fashion.utopian
- The Ferry is a cheap way to see lady liberty. There's always the free boat to ikea toomisterhow
- Thanks all! I am gonna look at tix to the comedy cellar and check out the high line park. we'll prob keep it in manhattan cause bro lives in NJsarahfailin
- @utopian, got it, so you're just trolling, and you have never been to NYC. Got it.monospaced
- What did you end up doing?monospaced
