Facebook is launching its new service called Watch...
They're jumping in the arena against Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc.
They say "You can chat and connect with people during an episode and join groups that like the same series and create a community" ... they're adding social to it, none of the competition offers this.
I know people for whom the Internet means Facebook, that's the only website they visit, everything is there for them. Add this now! Facebook is becoming a huge monster.
Traditional TV will be dead veeeeery soon. It's already dead for many people.
- only 50+ people watch tv.sted
- soon they are going to put ads in these chatrooms based on the products in the show.sted

"Sean Parker, the first president of Facebook, has a disturbing warning about the social network: "God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains.""

- It's sad that we're all forced to use Facebook as it is mandated by law and we have no other choice.reanimate

- This dude doesn’t have sour grapes. The company made him a billionaire.BusterBoy
- And kids use Snapchat these days. At least mine do...much more than anything else.BusterBoy
- If they hadn’t given us that platform to communicate and share memes somebody else would’ve. Maybe it’s Google we need to be weary ofIanbolton

- I’m not even sure it was that much of a calculated move. I think, as with everything, we got a bit excited and lost control of another digital platform.Ianbolton

Facebook paranoia
Talking on the phone with a contractor for the first time about our new office. Now I'm getting construction and real estate ads on fbook. I began to swear, because it's a brand new phone, and i started using messenger this month again since 2014. I start to get nervous and decide to uninstall all zuckerberg products from the phone.wait a fucking minute, wifi / cellular data is turned off
- SmartPhones are essentially corporate eves droppers. As for Alexa. Yikes.monoboy
- Wait. You were FB messaging construction companies too though right? It's not from your phone calls?Hayzilla
- Also despite being a new phone you were obviously communicating with them before so it'll be data assigned to your account not phone.Hayzilla
- just one single phone call, my partner handles this stuff but he wasn't available.
first time talking to this guy...sted - i usually get tech related ads and some crap, and when i opened the fuckbook it offered me roofing, door installation, and house cleaning services :Dsted
- http://www.qbn.com/r…GuyFawkes
- monNom0
This seems important:
- superficial, it isn't for techies. talks in the level that my mother would understand. and everything is shit. her solution: restructure the entire system LOLsted
- Do you think so? I thought her point about machine learning pushing people toward more extremist content to drive ad impressions hits the nail on the head.monNom
- The bit about triggering ads based on when mentally ill people are about to enter a manic episode was pretty disturbing as well.monNom
- maybe everyone knows this stuff already and is okay with it...monNom
- the preview image i see a millennial, in a spotlight, wearing a poets dress, imparting some sort of experience, nay knowledge... dare i click?robotron3k
- @monNom: machine learning and ai does a lot more today than just pushing ads into your face. and the thing is that you're still a customer who can decide.sted
- the ability to make proper decisions depends how well you are informed. every single media surfaces goal is to push that information forward.sted
- but you're still a customer who can decide.
now you can blame this system for not allowing users to filter this their own.sted - with some of the platforms you get the illusion that you're in control of the information flow and this is one of the reasons why facebook works so well.sted
- and here comes the classic issue of holy fuck i thought that the site i'm poking isn't using my information flow to make profit.sted
- and that leads to that it's completely understandable that they will automate whatever they can.sted
- I think this is moving forward the development of a real ai. because of the real human data.sted
- everybody should understand that as the opportunities have increased rapidly our decision making process barely changed.sted
- I think the thing that resonated with me most was the moral aspect. Is it okay to take advantage of someone without diminished capacity?monNom
- What if your ML algorithm is doing just that? Is it okay to exploit people if you have a software agent do it for you?monNom
- And on a broader scale, the implication is that the customer isn't free to decide in the end. If their environment is perfectly shaped to achieve a goal...monNom
- And all the stimulus is biased toward that goal, can you still be a free agent, able to make your own decisions?monNom
- Admittedly. That's a bit of a matrix-y notion, but it seems more plausible given the way we receive our information now.monNom
