Watched this again. It’s not good. Heath Ledger is fantastic in it but Bale is goofy. It starts off really strong (by copying Heat) but the last hour of this movie is a mess of shit. The tower action scene is boring as hell, the ferries scene is rushed, all the reprised lines at the end are crammed together. Joker’s final scene is cool but then Batman makes a joke and pushes him off a building?
For a super hero movie, sure it’s decent, but compared to all action movies, nah. It’s like they did almost everything really good and then totally fucked up
- Watch it again, pay attention to the last hour. Soozeville********

- you're not wrong but the score saves it all********
- agree, doesn't hold upaes
- This applies to everything related to all superheroes. They're asinine by definition. Only Adam West Batman works because it's an intentional farce.CyBrainX

Damn this was almost great but ended up being bad.
Watching it you can tell the book was great and the film was just a bit of a miss.
- Soundtrack dope AF********
- liked some things and didn’t many others. Soundtrack was good but the cinematography was so bad at times, a style choice that I hated.Ramanisky2

I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind the other day, it'd been a while.
On the one hand, it's classic 80s Spielberg and has that visual magic and playful build up of tension he's so good at, but on the other - the main character is a cunt who leaves his wife and kids, the aliens are random-ass trolling shitstains who think nothing of hoying people through time, essentially killing them from the viewpoint of the fmaily of those pilots who got caught up in the Bermuda Triangle, etc - or scaring the shit out of a mother whilst abducting her kid, only to give him back days later - for what? None of it makes sense. None of it has any useful thought. It's fucking long.
It is quite pretty though.
- Based on the popular ufo stories of that day. Also with no internet back then, the movie would've been amazing for those folks in the '70sgrafician
- Oh fuck, it was from 78 wasn't it?
Durr. Still.Nairn - I need to watch E.T. again.
Fucking loved that shit when I was a kid.Nairn - I mean, the movie 3D visualised the ufo stories only published on paper back then. Pretty cool for those days, but today not so much.grafician
- simpler plots for simpler times...grafician
- it's a little slow at times but so many great set pieces. Great stuff about Spielberg and Lucas both thinking they'd made a sci-fi turkey at the same timefadein11
- Both praising each others film as a masterpiece and shit scared their own was shit.fadein11
- you have a link to that, fadein?
what is that?Nairn - er.. I mean like "I'd like to know more" not "CITE YOUR FUCKING SOURCES, CUNT!"Nairn

- the fuller story is in a book on 70's cinema I read a while back... will dig out, got it here somewherefadein11

- they always helped each other early on, there's a section on Spielberg's paranoia about Close Encounters, but I will look sad taking another pic won't I?fadein11
- +1 thanksNairn

Gwife signed up to Disney+ to research a production that was on there so we thought "great, we can finally watch those mindless Avenger movies!" Turns out there's also all the flicks for the individual heroes, so we thought it'd be amusing to watch them all in progression through whatever 'phases' Marvel have. I mean, I quite enjoyed the first IronMan, all those years ago.
They're all shit, aren't they?
I get now what Scorcese was on about when he bemoaned their existence - they're not cinema in the old sense, they're just roller-coaster eye candy.
Thor is the one that's surprised me most so far - a stellar cast but just.. bilge. Utter, utter bilge.
I know it's pointless for a middling middle aged nonent to make this point about kids movies, but I was genuinely a bit surprised.
Will plough on though, at least for the Avengers flicks themselves. I need to make sense of all the internet memes with that big headed dude destroying the world with the jewel ...things.
