Jay, should I just be prepared to spend the money on the higher quality ND filters?
like: "b+2, heliopan, and as of late, formatt-hitech"
and what about singh?
- sorry—8mos later. yeah. singh is high on my list! - 100815jaylarson

The evolution of street photography.

Found a mint condition, unused Pentax P3 from 1985 at a consignment shop on vacation up in Wisconsin last week. Came with a 50mm f2.8 and a 35-70mm f3.4, camera bag, and all manuals for $75. Such a nice score. When I got some film for it and opened up the back, it still had the adhesive decal that said "remove before first use" above the film tray.
Going to use it for black and whites, which I've wanted to do for a while. I'm always a little opposed to converting digital shots to B&W because I rarely ever think about them in the context of B&W for composition, and since I always shoot in Raw on my Nikon.
- wow, looks good!Ben99
- I started setting my Nikons to B&W in-camera, shooting RAW. It's perfect: the image shows up in BW on the screen, but LR brings it up in colour to convert.nb
- But, obviously you should still shoot film because film is fantastic and you'll learn a lot. I'm just saying that BW on digital RAW is also cool.nb

I think i will sell my Canon 60D and go with a Canon SL1 (100D) ... The smallest SLR on the market, weight only 407g compare to 770g for the 60D
Its a lower market camera, but after thinking about it and analysing both camera, there's not much difference on quality and speed. I think it fits my needs.
Also, i post-prod my pictures in Lightroom. I can make iPhone pictures looks great, so why would i pay 2,000$ for a camera after all?
But the main reason i want to switch is the weight of my Canon 60D and all DSLR... SO FUCKIN HEAVY! Usually when i take pictures, its outside on a trip for many hours, see all day long. I'm really tired of that much weight.
- and all my lenses will fit on itBen99
- Size compararison: https://i1266.photob…Ben99
- Go Micro4/3 if you want light weight. Olympus and Fuji make some real gems.formed
- I'll switch sometime, too, my D800 w/ grip and 24-70 weights almost 10lbsformed
- Get this one to match you iPhone.
http://i.ytimg.com/v…ok_not_ok - SL1 looks good if you prefer SLR-style shooting. Personally, I'd look at the little Sonys (A6000, etc.)nb
- I prefer SLR type camera yes. And i already own 4 lenses i would like to continue using.Ben99
- i dont want to buy new lenses. those fuckers cost a lot.Ben99
- Ben990
What would you recommand?
The cheapest/good lens for a Canon DSLR for doing macro photography?
- don't buy cheap lenses. go rent a good one for the job.uan
- the expensive 100mm f2.8 IS L has probably the best optical quality I have ever seen.uan
- You have a 50mm 1.8? Look at extension tubes. A pain in the ass to work with, and somewhat limited range, but for extreme macro, it's the cheapest way.nb
- Uh, depends on the camera body, too. Some bodies won't operate with tubes.nb
- Ben990
- does the SL1 have the same video focusing as the 70D where you touch the screen where you want it to focus?vaxorcist
- they have touchscreens now? I realize, I must be really old by now :Duan
- yep with touch screen. Just got it, really nice and LIGHT camera, better than expected. Really fast too. I dont feel i downgraded from my 60DBen99
- i hate touch screen camera... kids these days with their new tech. ugh.....pango
- you dont have to use the touch screen pangoBen99

Do you guys have any info/tips on shooting publications? Covers/spreads, etc. Say for a portfolio in a studio environment (minus the studio). Any help would be appreciated.

I've been going through and editing the last 5 years of my micro 4/3 shots.

I'm on the hunt for a new camera. I want something that takes full frame quality shots like my old 5d mii but lighter and cheaper? I'd like to keep everything under 1k, max 2k for a body and lense.
- Oops, too expensive. It is FF and small, though!nb
- Aren't the sony A7's newer and better?pinkfloyd
- Maybe, but not smaller. The RX1 is the size of a large Point+Shootnb
- Fuji XT-1formed
- Shout-outs for the X-T1 - incredibly fun to use and small enough to carry everywhere. I've had mine for over a year still only use the (great) 18-55 kit lens.face_melter
- Saw the XT1, and it looks cool but sensor isn't as good as the full frames?pinkfloyd
- The sensor isn't ff, but it's fantastic. Picture quality is better than bigger sensor. So unless you are shooting billboards you should be fine.formed
- fyi, I have a Nikon D800 and the thing is a nightmare to carry around. Done over, I'd go with some micro4/3formed
- http://www.amazon.co…ok_not_ok
- Sony A7 mkII cameras seem to be next to ideal.futurefood
- A7 is way out of his price rangeformed
- The Sony A7's and Fuji X's are the best. Fuji glass is ridiculous - up there with Leica.inteliboy
- sony is likely your best option. do you have many lenses?jaylarson
- No lenses nowpinkfloyd
- sony would be perfect for what you desire. only the price tag isn't (yet).SimonFFM
- Not sure any ff is under 2k...
But so far Sony is the closest thing to what you want.pango - Nikon D750 goes for 1600-1700. It's a great camera! but it's about the same size as a 5djaylarson
- I'll take your 5dii. You only do selfie anyway :Ppango
- please delete all those selfies :Dpinkfloyd
- i use the 6D and its great, not as many AF points but the center AF point is bang on.cruddlebub
- and i use the f1.4 art 35mm and 50mm lenses. both super lensescruddlebub
- pinkfloyd0
Does this work?
- Thought you want ffpango
- I think the a 7s have ff sensors?pinkfloyd
- Dude just get the sony a7ii with the kit lens on b&h right now for $2,899. Smallest, best, FF package possible period.HijoDMaite
- Sorry, for $1899.HijoDMaite

- Oh it does? Ya get itpango

I've got a photoshop tool name question:
The Dodge tool and the Burn tool lighten or darken areas of the image. These tools are based on a traditional darkroom technique for regulating exposure on specific areas of a print.
Photographers hold back light to lighten an area on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print (burning).
My question, Isn't it the other way around?
less light -> darker area, more light -> lighter areaIs it because you work from a negative in the the dark room, so the formula is inverted?
- In the darkroom, the longer the light is projected onto the paper, the darker it gets. The paper starts as white, and the light exposes it to black.nb
- So, more light = more black.nb
- Regarding your last sentence, you have it backwards. The formula is inverted, therefore you must work from a negative. ;)nb
- yep, my mind is twisted on this subject...thanks, your explanations are helping clearing this mess up.uan

I'm looking at the different a7 models, but it's a bit confusing. There's the:
a7
a7ii
a7iik
a7r
a7r ii
a7s
alpha a7ffs, what's the cheapest one I can get that takes great portrait, fashion photos?
Recommendations on a lense? Thanks
- a7rii + Batis 85mmok_not_ok
- Used a7's here
http://www.bhphotovi…ok_not_ok - Would I need an adapter for the Batis 85mm?pinkfloyd
- I'd go for the a7r ii, just the newer one. 85mm is a great lens, no idea what Batis isformed
- Zeiss Batis is Sony FE mount so no need for an adapter.ok_not_ok
- Gotcha. Do they have any fast glass yet?formed

- f1.4 focus on eyes, strobe with diffusor from top right, some light redish treatment of the blacks? (my guess)uan
- camera is also above the model, pointing slightly down.uan
- above 2 are right plus light source may be a strip box or narrow softbox (look at eyes for softbox reflection)... light source above model background far awayvaxorcist
- start with pretty girl scantily clad in artsy clothing/accessories... the rest you could do in Ps if you wanted toformed
- Photoshop > Gaussian Blurutopian
- there was some "grain" or "add-noise" and/or texture overlay too....vaxorcist
- Never use Ps!
Not sure on exact camera but it looks like a large format camera style. Best cameras of all time!mugwart - Probably a Large Format camera. Slight tilt/shift. Lighting is a large softbox just off-center, higher than the model's head.nb
- Never use Ps? Huh? No one can tell if it's done well, just like you can't tell if it's "large format" or a phone if it's a good photoformed
- I feel you can tell. Also for the "technical skill" and artistic. I find the moment computers involves the magick is lost.mugwart
- It's definitely not a phone photo.nb
- You may not be able to tell film or digital in this shitty compressed jpg, but if you look at a true analog print, you'll know the difference.nb
- Unless you're a philistine!nb
- Nah, you can't tell, that's silly. It's totally up to the artist. A great image is a great image, doesn't matter how it was made (Ps, in camera, etc.)formed
- It just depends on where you are coming from. I come from Ps, so naturally that's paramount.formed
- Someone coming from only film might think it should all be in camera, but it doesn't matter. If it's done well, you cannot tell.formed
- Oh, it doesn't have to be "all in the camera" to be a film photo. Film with Photoshop is still film, and you I can still tell the difference.nb
- Which is not to say that digital images are not great images! They can be very great! Film isn't inherently better, it's just different.nb

Has anyone tried the software Flixel for creating Cinemagraph in Photoshop?
- Ben990
Didnt know we could reverse a 50mm lense to do macro! Nice!
