best maps of the city can be found in McDonalds.. make sure you visit the McDonalds at the Spanish Steps for the best map.
make sure you have good comfortable shoes/ sneakers as the ground is mostly cobblestones and uneven.. it will hurt your back after awhile walking around..
the "Let's Go" italy books also give a good idea of what to do..
be EXTREMELY weary of your belongings especially in the train station. make sure you always are holding onto your stuff. or you will be robbed by gypsies.
if you are going to the Vatican or St Peters, make sure you are dressed correctly, girls have to wear a dress that covers their shoulders and their knees or else they will not be allowed in.
i rented a vespa over a car, as some streets a very narrow, and is hard to drive in while a vespa makes life easy.
have fun and be safe.

If you are up Pisa way then go to Lucca. It's a beautifu car-less town.
Some awesome beaches at Forte dei Marmi. Out of (italian) season these beaches are dead dead quiet.

I wish I could help you out, but I'm the worst tourist ever, because I stay away from all the touristy places,
my advice if you want to really see rome, is to wake up around 6am and visit the most frequented places, we did with the lady some years ago and its amazing how beautiful the city is when there's no one around

I used these for a week. It was an amazing way to get around. Electrinic little cars do 45MPH and you can park anywhere. There have onboard ipdad navigation with all the best places to goto. And a great way to get noticed. people were taking photos of us everywhere we went. Turned more heads than a ferrari!
