i want to visit rome with the girl this year and have heard a great way to go about it is to decide what you want to do, rent a car and just do it yourself (as opposed to tours, etc.)
so, i'm gonna do that.
the main thing on my list is pompeii and herculaneum. what else should i not miss while i'm in the region? any tips?

You would like Siena (really great gothic architecture, narrow alleys, tons of history), but it's not exactly near Rome. Say hi to our black beauty italian stallion.
- +1. Sienna is legit. It's perched on a mountain top (for defense) and requires an adventure to get there. Especially if you rent a fiat, which needs a tail windnthkl

Do as the Romans do

they broke it down pretty well here over a 3-day period http://goitaly.about.com/od/rome…
then i can add a day or two for pompeii and whatever else i feel like doing

best maps of the city can be found in McDonalds.. make sure you visit the McDonalds at the Spanish Steps for the best map.
make sure you have good comfortable shoes/ sneakers as the ground is mostly cobblestones and uneven.. it will hurt your back after awhile walking around..
the "Let's Go" italy books also give a good idea of what to do..
be EXTREMELY weary of your belongings especially in the train station. make sure you always are holding onto your stuff. or you will be robbed by gypsies.
if you are going to the Vatican or St Peters, make sure you are dressed correctly, girls have to wear a dress that covers their shoulders and their knees or else they will not be allowed in.
i rented a vespa over a car, as some streets a very narrow, and is hard to drive in while a vespa makes life easy.
have fun and be safe.

Sack it, like the Visigoths.

I wish I could help you out, but I'm the worst tourist ever, because I stay away from all the touristy places,
my advice if you want to really see rome, is to wake up around 6am and visit the most frequented places, we did with the lady some years ago and its amazing how beautiful the city is when there's no one around

I used these for a week. It was an amazing way to get around. Electrinic little cars do 45MPH and you can park anywhere. There have onboard ipdad navigation with all the best places to goto. And a great way to get noticed. people were taking photos of us everywhere we went. Turned more heads than a ferrari!

i think i'm gonna fly into rome, do rome stuffs, stay the night there then rent a car and head south to herculaneum and pompeii, stopping in naples for some legit pizza. stay in naples overnight after exploring the ruined cities. head back up to florence, stay and do shit there for a couple days, then go further north to venice, stay at a B&B there, then head west to milan to see the ossuary and bug georges before taking a train back to rome for my flight home. i've found a dozen or so non-touristy hidden gems i'll stop at along the way (grottoes, medical museums, relics, an ancient pharmacy)

Pompeii was on strike when I was there. Literally. We took the train there, etc., just to learn they decided to close it (this happened numerous times on the trains, too, they'd just 'stop' for a few hours in the middle of nowhere!).
So we ended up going to Herculaneum, which was pretty cool too.
This was years ago, but just a heads up. Things don't run the same over there!
