<blink>Facebook stock surges to new high following news WhatsApp will add voice messaging</blink>
- Beeswax0
Ok i understand the WhatsApp is great alternative to normal SMS messaging and that it has 500 mil users constantly coming back at higher rates.
What about the entry barricade?
What about competition?
We're not talking about a complex piece of software and a business model.
WhatsApp is living on thin ice, it just takes couple of seconds for a user to switch their message app to a new one. And that 500 mil. users are nothing but a big number that can migrate in the course of a 6 months.
This seems to me a similar mistake that's been done in the dot com boom era.
It's against the nature of internet ecosystem to drive a pile this deep.

Does the receiver also has to have WhatsApp?

Bw - the hope is that it is the #1 and will continue to grow. Look at FB or Twitter, nothing that someone else couldn't do, but they are the #1's.
Even Amazon had a ton of competitors in the beginning, but they were the #1 and survived.Shit, there were even a ton of QBN's. Ha.
- I agree about twitter but the rest is far more complicatedBeeswax

it's pretty easy metrics. AT&T wants to charge me $240 a year for texting (::cocksuckers::). So i dropped it for What and FB Messenger. Anyone not onboard can either pick up the phone or email me.
As much as i rankle at the new media superstars, at least they aren't the old media superstars. WTF has AT&T done for me?

I get unlimited text & phone with AT&T.
- i was on 200messages for $5 when i "upgraded" to unlimited at $20 because of 1 rough month. They won't let me have the old option.
MrAbominable - ...have the older option. Presently, for me to get texting, it's $20 mo.MrAbominable

Imagine what these people are doing with our data, behaviour, location... all our conversations must be stored and they are being able to analyse the human race in a way that never happened before.
That's a lot of power for the company that holds that information.
- sorry for the badly written post. EmbarrasingclearThoughts
- yup... it's just customer data on a new level, great for spotting trends and targeting adsmonospaced

WhatsApp's now available for desktop

WhatsApp's value lies in the multitude of non-nerdy people who Just Fucking Use it and know no better.
My gf for instance - she loathes Facebook (ha) and social media, yet I hear her fucking phone pinging WhatsApp notifications from about 7am through to midnight, every 20 minutes or so.
All her friends here and abroad use it, as too her family.
I can't think how much effort it would take to usurp or fuck up an app that has nigh-on ¾Bn users.
it's been done before though, I suppose...

Cost: $22billion (according to TechCrunch and FB's disclosures)
Revenue: $15.921million (last quarter)
Loss: $232.5 millionShould be interesting to see where this goes. It's going to be a race to combine it all...Google, MS/Skype, etc.

Argh, I can't use WhatsApp on OS X because I'm using an old iPhone 4 and it doesn't support the latest iOS.
Don't really want to buy a new phone just so I can save a little time chatting.
Is there any other way?

Opt out of data-sharing with Facebook:

Man I hate using WhatsApp. The whole design / UI of the thing is fugly. The equivalent of working in a 1990's corporate office as a data inputter.
Why hasn't Line app become as popular in the West as it has in Asia. What's not to love about sending Panpaka stickers:
