16 bn for a company with 50 employees??? MS bought Nokia for 7 bn. Crazy.

Why only 16 billion?

So it's over for Facebook then?
This is an absolutely ridiculous sum of money to pay for a generic instant messenger platform when they already have their own.

WhatsApp has taken over mobile messaging, teenagers use it more than FB itself, even my mom uses it.
May be a ridiculous amount of money indeed, but it seems a clever move as well.- Until a new mobile messaging app becomes popular...ukit2
- How is it a clever move when if they had embraced mobile properly they would have been the WhatsAppanimatedgif

"$4 billion in cash and about $12 billion in Facebook shares"
CASH? really? I highly doubt they handed over 4 billion in notes.
- And those shares shouldn't count as Whatsapp company value considering FB will die.sem
- you clearly dont' know what cash meansmonospaced
- and FB isn't about to diemonospaced

FORBES:
Can we stop saying 'worth $16bn because thats an estimated value when you factor in the Facebook shares.Facebook being a company that has recently seen a big fall off from its younger demographic and will most probably see a big change in user numbers in the next few years.
They actually got paid $4bn, so just over £2bn. Which is still a crazy amount of money considering it is an App that is even getting phased out by younger people already by things like KIK etc which allow you to message people without needing their number blah blah blah.
Its GREAT for the Whatsapp team, but don't get lost in the media spin of $16bn cash etc.
- still... dude, its still 4billions and 12billions share.benfal99

Didn't the Whatsapp guy promise never to put ads on there?
If that's the case, they need to at least double in size to break even.
Seems insane to me. 1bn would be a good deal, 16bn is just insane. Apple won't even spend 1bn for an acquisition (but they have an actual product line, not just a website).
sem - there rarely are all cash deals anyway, always valued at the prices on transaction, so $16bn is accurate, today (well, maybe a little as FB is down a tad).
- I didn't know you could base a companies worth on its members acquired stocks?sem
- stocks for another company that is. Wouldn't that effect the owners worth rather than the company he runs?sem
- they did just double in size by becoming part of FB family, and that has tons of ads, so donemonospaced
- no adds, at least that continues to be the promiseformed
- for the value, it is always based on stock value. Zuckerberg is valued by his stock, not just bank account, his "worth"formed
- it is a separate app, different business model, so they haven't gotten any 'new' users (I don't care to use it, but I use FB)formed

These Are All The Major Companies That Are Currently Worth Less Than WhatsApp
American Airlines – $12.3B
Expedia -$10.2B
The Gap – $19B
Harley-Davidson – $14.1B
Hertz – $11.5B
Macy’s – $19.6B
Ryanair – $15.5B
Southwest Airlines – $14.7B
Symantec – $14.4B- WhatsApp was valued at less than $4B, and purchased for that muchmonospaced
- so, none of those are worth less, actuallymonospaced
- this is such a joke, it's almost like they know there will be another financial crash soonGeorgesIV
- the capital requirements for all those businesses are huge. Whatapp probably has a ridiculous profit margin as virtually no overheadmonNom
- ...as they have such low overhead. 50 employees and hardly any equipment/realestate costsmonNom
- mono - how do you get "valued at $4bn"? It sold for $16bn, Google offered $10bnformed
- market capitilizarion based on potential users with potential advertising similar to google by ammount of users divided by 3.kingsteven

it only works if the person you're texting has the same app though...that makes me not wanting to use it
- but if all your friends used it, you probably would want to toomonospaced
- I would, but none of my friends use it lol.cbass99

The reason why WhatsApp is so valuable and the purchase is a brilliant move, is because this is a direct threat to the phone companies. Once Wi-Fi is everywhere, WhatsApp will establish itself as THE communications platform worldwide. This is HUGE!
