I've had a few years away from here — this could perhaps be in the recent work thread. Anyway...I'm up to book 800 ish now — https://www.caferoyalbooks.com — if you're into documentary type photography.

fucken hell @1:27 "...get a Leica and wake up in the morning and say, wow, I really have a Leica..."
punches, brass knuckle punches for this guy..
- So is anybody with a Leica camera a photographer?grafician
- very few.futurefood
- He started that sentence with “I don’t...”nb
- “I don’t get a Leica and wake up in the morning and say, wow, I really have a Leica..."nb
- Not unless they lived in the 60s. They are beyond romanticized, especially in the gearhead era.garbage
- They were popular because they are compact and had a cloth shutter. I had to look this guy up.. and he's just a rich guy with gear reviews.garbage
- Was a Leica my dream camera as a kid? Yup. Is it worth the insane price? Nope.garbage
- My used Leica m6 has more or less gone up with inflation. So technically costs nothing to own it, if I eventually sell it before it dies or gets stolennb
- Yea the bodies can be found for cheap if you are patient. It’s the lenses that will tear a hole in your wallet. Most are worth it thoughfuturefood
- Lately I’ve been finding older 50s/60s lenses for under $400 in amazing condition. I like shooting with those mostlyfuturefood
- Yeah, I couldn't care less about owning a Leica body. Old Leica glass, on the other hand? Yes. M or R, I don't care. Gimme.Continuity
- Konica Hexar AF. It's called the Poor Man's M6 for a reason.garbage
- Though I pretty much only shoot Fujinon, they're just beyond sharp. Oly Zuiko lenses pair well with the X system.garbage
- It's not about the gear, it's about the operator.garbage
- I had a chance to mount a colleague's 50 mm Summicron-R on the Canon 7D I owned at the time. The 'Leica look' is for real. What a joy to use.Continuity
- (this was some 10 years ago)Continuity
- Damn, I hope he kept his R Lens. prices have skyrocketed in past years. I just invested in a set of R's and it came with a 50mm Summilux. Worth every penny!futurefood
- The R was such a great form factor, too. Chunky. Hefty. Nice slow, smooth travel on the focus rings.
That Summilux of yours must be dreamy wide open.Continuity

I always found spending Leica money for a camera and lenses was crazy until I tried a Q3 on loan, first Leica I ever shot with.
Was on a docu-style job with my Fuji Xs and intended to use them if anything for longer lens shots, ended up not using the Xs once on that job.
The Q3 is so streamlined, took no time to get used to, felt great in the hand, and the files were beautiful, the way the lens captured the light, loved the colors even right on the screen. Its 28mm is wider than I'd like but proved very useful.
I don't buy their 35-50-75-90mm digital crop non-sense, but without hoping to replicate those focal length you can definitely crop those files A LOT.From there I got to try the SL3 for an interchangeable lens system. Tried it with the 20-90mm. Didn't care to try the M series because of the manual focus.
SL3 not much more complicated to get into, heavier body and lens of course, the job I tried it on was not the ideal test (short boring shoot) but I was into it, that big LEICA type is overkill but can be taped if necessary.I'm slowly getting used to the idea of spending that kind of money but the lens prices are killing me. I see that M lenses can be mounted on the SL and start looking into that + cheaper alternatives (Voigtlander etc), trying to decide whether Leica lenses are mandatory for my use or not, mostly docu-style.
Now that I'm not totally opposed to the idea of Leica (though still a big purchase decision for me), I bump into an older guy at the museum, sporting a M11-P with 35mm summilux. Oh that shutter sound, that compactness, that down-to-one-camera appeal. I'm thinking I can be fine going back to manual focus and escaping the gear race for a while.
I'm now considering getting rid of everything and going for the M which of course is more expensive than the Q and SL....!
That older guy's 1 lens setup is 15k... not ready for this yet. There are tons of cameras out there that are better in many ways and I'm a believer that the right camera is the one you have, but I gotta say my short experience with Leica was a sweet, sweet one.
I'll probably end up going for the Q3 though that would mean keeping another body around for a longer lens.
Curious about your experiences with that brand.
I get a lot of recos for Sony Alphas but never enjoyed using those.
Also not a big fan of second-hand digital cameras.- I had the M10 for a few years, it is amazing. Recently started using M240 again because I prefer the look of the sensor.futurefood
- I traded my M10 for a cine camera which I feel gives the look of a Leica sensor in a motion picture camera.futurefood
- The SL lineup is fantastic! I would like an SL3 because I can use both M mount Leica lenses and Canon EF mount cine lenses I'm collectingfuturefood
- Have you seen any of the recent Monochrom cameras? absolutely gorgeous images!futurefood
- if you do get an M or SL system, check out the Voigtlander Nokton VM series (ver. III). Superb lenses and under 1k usually.futurefood
- To me, these lenses perform just as impressively as any Leica ASPH equivalent from the 90s era. No need to spend morefuturefood
- Thanks so much futurefood !
I do separate photo and video, but if the Canon C70 could also shoot stills I would def just go with this.spl33nidoru - Had checked those Voigtlander lenses indeed and they might be the ones to make me bite the bullet on the camera! Will check more.
Really appreciate your input!spl33nidoru - Will take a look at the M240, thanksspl33nidoru
- C70 is nice! Check out the M10-R too if you want something closer to M11.futurefood
- This video below features the actual camera and lens I traded off. I ended up buying the lens back from him. They are too amazing to let go..futurefood
- https://www.youtube.…futurefood
- Oh, really nice!
Your Voigtlander advice makes me lean towards the SL3 now. Which cine camera did you go for btw ?spl33nidoru - I'm looking at the SL2-s as well, the sensor seems to be closer to the M10futurefood
- I traded my Leica stuff for that youtuber's RED Komodo set up. I also traded a 35mm Summilux for his set of Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon cine primesfuturefood
- Those Xenon's have a similar style to Leica lenses from the 70s. My favorite era of Leica glass!futurefood
- Dayum! That's a great combo.
Thanks again for your insights!spl33nidoru - I have an M6 (film) and am considering a digital M. I will say this: voigtlander and other lenses have all disappointed me.nb
- In the end, you end up spending the money on the leica lens. You get what you pay for.nb
- Leica prices are inflated a bit, but there is no $1000 lens that is going to compare to a $3000 lens.nb
- Not that VL is bad. They’re very good. But it’s just you get what you pay for. Leica is impressive.nb
