- not profitable and still hacking away at their $1B loss on all previous surfacesmonospaced
- not growing strongly... just growing, and they won't even release a single sales figuremonospaced

I have one. who wants it. 1 year free of ms office and fully loaded adobe cc suite. seriously. I got it for free, and I'll probably sell it on ebay or craigslist.
- I'll take it. Give you my ipad and cash :-)formed

"Microsoft tells us that Surface became profitable for the first time this quarter..."
Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/m…
I think that's pretty great. It is a useful item, something that can continue to evolve and improve, eventually replacing laptops. If it continues to grow, and MS's numbers improve like they did this quarter, I think there will be some great things to come.
- I think it's good. More choice than just all the uninspired Android tablets..ETM

LOL formed, you literally forgot to include the rest of that sentence. Here you go:
"... but without an exact break down of all the marketing and R&D costs involved, it's hard to say if Surface is profitable just yet."
- and before you jump on me, I 100% agree with you on all you wrote in your paragraph above thismonospaced
- It's not like Apple or anyone else includes their R&D or Marketing budgets in the profits for specific products...zarkonite
- Apple posts sales figures for actual products as well as for R&D yearly. Microsoft lost $1B on Surfaces already.monospaced
- Any company breaking into established spaces or carving a slightly new market will lose money at the onset.ETM
- Except for Apple?monospaced
- You do understand the difference between competing in an established market and creating a category, yes?ETM
- Surface is not a new category, but a divergence (or combination) or existing category(ies).ETM
- Apple has the credit for creating the new categories.monospaced
- Yeah, great. We know. Not what is being discussed.ETM
- iPhone, yes. Apple did not create the Laptop category, and tablet category is debatable.ETM
- Are you able to have a conversation without bring it back to Apple? Is that what working with you would be like?ETM

- dude, Microsoft made the comparison, that's what we're fucking talkign about actually, so lay offmonospaced

If we are talking "literally", what you quoted is out of context.
It is profitable, that's what matters, and revenues are more than double what they were before, that's pretty good, especially considering Apple is losing iPad sales.MS is late to the game, but with a superior product. Where it goes we'll have to see.
Apple has been riding its momentum wave for ages now. If the first iPhone wasn't such a hit, they wouldn't be where they are. There hasn't been anything really great about the last 3-4 versions, just incremental improvements. But with their base, it is an easy upgrade, so they keep raking in the profits. How long they can go off momentum and incremental improvements remains to be seen (iPad sales are plunging, will the iPhone 6s sell as well as the 6? I'll be a lot of money no, but it will sell well).
- apple stock is at all time highhotroddy
- Their previous revenues were dismal and resulted in a $1B loss. Doubling that is easy, and still not profitable.monospaced
- Yes, good that they are selling, but those numbers are actually very bad for a 3rd attempt product.monospaced
- I can't follow you, they say it is profitable, but you say it is not...why do you say that??formed
- MSFT is at an all time high, too, fyiformed
- There's a HUGE diff between revenue and profit. That's what I mean. Ms hasn'tade any profit.monospaced
- But they do have 80 billion in cash, so they can wait things out a bit.ETM
- oh that's cutemonospaced
- Ahh Mono. Always a twat with snide Apple comments and comparison.ETM
- How many stocks you have now? 100 with the split? Or did you grab more?ETM
- 112 post split. Did not pick up more.monospaced

For all the snark they get, for all the cockups they've made and opportunities missed, MS are still one of the largest companies in the world, by stock cap: http://www.washingtonpost.com/bu…
In fact, second biggest.
- nice. not sure it is actually a redeeming factor, but nicemonospaced

Has anyone tried web development on the surface pro? I like it's weight and stylus, but is the screen big enough or should I get a macbook air?
- SteveJobs0
also do you need a tablet or a laptop? macbook air vs surface isn't really an accurate comparison and if you're actually considering the air then you're probably not really needing a tablet methinks.
- I have no need for a tablet, but I need something very light.pinkfloyd
- That is a fair comparison and the ENTIRE basis of microsofts campaign btwmonospaced

Is an i5 with 4gb enough power to draw with photoshop? I need to know asap, thanks.
- LOL. Yeah. 4gB and an outdated processor spec are really fun with Photoshop. Do it. Lol.monospaced
- Can you be anymore psychotic?pinkfloyd
- lol, that's funny stuff...just get the best you can afford, more=betterformed
- There's a guy selling it for 840 on craigslist, the 8gb would cost 1299 plus tax and keyboard in storespinkfloyd
- Just sayin. 4gb isn't fun regardless of computer. Photoshop uses that up fast in my experience. Not psychomonospaced
- That's a good idea. I should make a no psycho mono meme. jkpinkfloyd
- mono is right, photoshop is no fun on the surface. same low-spec shit as a macbook airmekk
- I ended up getting an 8gb surface pro. I'll see if I can install an older version of photoshoppinkfloyd

So MS has a new Laptop for us.
It has a 13.5" touchscreen that you can detach and use as a tablet, sports a quad core i7 and a fucking nvidia GPU. It also has pcie-ssd storage and up to 16 GB ram. Starts at ca. $1500 and looks just beautiful.
Oh and there is a new Surface Pro 4 as well :-)
Has intels new chips, a new fingerprint sensor, new screen and some smaller improvements on the case.
MS is stepping up their game and continues to outclass the traditional windows laptop makers. I like this a lot!

Oh and it's called the "Surface Book"
- I really like how they've revolutionized the entire computer industry with a device that puts Apple to shame. It's a tablet, but with a keyboard!omg
- I love this concept. The i5/i7 is in the screen-device, the nvidia GPU is in the keyboard. Have to work hard? Just snap it in for more power!mekk
- Oh wow. Now there's something. Can you get Snake on it? and a calculator?Ianbolton
- Looks great. Yes, finally something useful!formed

Touchscreen laptops from Microsoft? Okay.
- Yeah, crazy isn't it?
I almost bought a Toshiba Windows Touchscreen laptop back in 2004 or so.detritus - and yet people here start trying to justify a iPad Pro and minute it's announced, even though it's "old"formed
- who did that?monospaced
- go read the postsformed

surface book is very tempting. i suppose i could ssh into my servers using the chrome extension... but going back to adobe has a foul taste.
