Watching the behind the scenes on the bluray, they really got hung up with the robot design and got stubborn about it. Its really shitty and stupid looking, but they were so determined to take on the challenge and make it work when they really should have come up with some different designs.

Reminds me of the original star wars when you would see R2D2 trying to walk instead of roll, and he would just rock back and forth inching along. Its 2015 Nolan, there are better ways to do this. Shoulda just done the whole thing as CGI. You can really tell when the guy is pushing it along in the walking scenes. It looks really silly.

    • Given Boston Dynamics stuff, yeah, but I think taht was the point, no? Keep it dumb simple, referencing older sci-fi movies, even 2001.formed
    • All makes it feel more surreal. Kinda silly, but I think it worked overall.formed
    • I think its mostly 2001 in base story line minus few things. I think the robots are designed to make it more retro looking? monolithic like 2001. proportionsyurimon
    • maybe the same as the monolith cubeyurimon
    • Right, probably a design choice. I forgot about the monoliths, you are right, directly referencing those. Probably a lot more subtle references here and thereformed

Just seen it. I have a question about the ghost 5th dimensions scene. so they have it in a time loop where the books on the little girls room, fall off the shelves and provide the little girl messages. my question is who pushed the books to make the messages the first time in order to start the time loop? The dad turns out sending the messages but how did he start the loop? something outside of him would need to start the cycle of him ending up in space and at nasa the first time around?

    • Isn't that part of the enjoyable part? Chicken or the egg? This isn't a unique approach, but it works and makes you think and think.formed
    • I see what you are saying. He hints at we made a choice which is true. everything is choice. I'd think. ok how are they showing a choice that is setup almostyurimon
    • like its not a choice at all. most of the characters are tricked/lied to and acting in ignorance under the flag of greater good.yurimon
    • This is the obvious and played paradox of any time travel story or scenario. They didn't even bother to go into it.monospaced
    • Its still chicken and the egg like formed said. there still need a beginning for an action especially if you deal in time space.yurimon
    • Are you arguing with me?monospaced

Just saw it, very much a dumb version of 2001, but mostly entertaining.

i wish nolan worked with better screen writers.
His films are fun, I enjoy them - though there's always a bunch of nagging self-indulgent plot issues that get in the way.

I though the film was not bad. on the good side.

Aside from the agenda 21 propaganda. which seems common these days.

It has its standard occult imagery about time, for example. a wormhole near saturn which is symbolically kronos, the father of time. also sometimes referred to the black sun. which they showed later.

Dark occult aspect is that he symbolically found the elixir of life inside the black sun.

Another dark occult is idea is that Michael Caine led them on the journey to the truth even though everything is a lie. He was the evil character by the way along with Matt Damon. However they did find their way when Caine died. end justifies the means type boosheet.

dark occult: Something always gained by certain characters dying as symbolic sacrifice.

More occult: Jessica Chastain, a red head usually symbolically represents whore of babylon and the Madonna at the same time in deeper movies who birthed a new society.

The main theme of interstellar is almost the same as 2001 which is the birth of a new man or new society while the profane die as a sacrifice. they say it more bluntly, however they tried to play down the trans-humanist boosheet which is smert.

What i found interesting and unexpected was the symbolism of the time in the blackhole or blacksun. Occult shape representing time is the hypercube. However in some circles its also considered a trap of time.

basic clock with 12 dials. very zodiac

To sum up the story, it mirrors the as above so below symboligism because each character can also represent the inner battle for enlightenment. Different aspects of the self. Example. Matthew McConaughey battle with Matt Damien is representative of battle within the mind and the primal animal self before he was able to journey to the blackhole for his enlightenment . shit like that. just a shot at a crit.

if i think of more stuffs ill post.

'Agenda 21 propaganda' — basically what fearful and ignorant people who live in Bumfucksville, Nowhere, who've never left their state, who have fuck all idea about the world beyond their white picket fence — believe about a common sense reaction to "Holy Shit, we've added how many Billion extra humans to the planet in the past five decades?! That can't continue... surely?"

    • Bankers rule the world. Nobody does a sanity check on people in power. How they make money, the fact they dont give 2 shits about common people. this is nothingyurimon
    • new, its been going on for 5k years. kings starved the unwanted by controlling food. nothing much changed sept some technological, bureaucratic growth ofyurimon
    • methods of control. its even written in their own literature. heres an idea why dont you stop building tanks. I'm sure there is a truth of how much this planetyurimon

    • people with this complex cant stand happy and free society. they will destroy it along with civilization itself. we enable it by doing nothing.yurimon
    • All that may be well and good, but we simply cannot sustain 7-10Bn people under current modalities. Basically, that's all that A21 sets out to address.detritus

I know its possibly a science thing, but it bugs me that the black hole looks like Saturn. Maybe thats how its technically supposed to look from all their data or whatever, but I just think some things are ok to change for the sake of a movie.

When I think of black hole, I just dont envision it having this bright glowing circle around it (what is that?), or another circle on a different plane (what is that?). Just didnt look menacing at all due to the design.

The other thing I read about black holes is that as you pass the event horizon, it would stretch every molecule in you and tear you apart. So they changed some of the things for the sake of the movie, but not others. Dont get that. I would have preferred it to be a black hole with the lensing effects around it, with no glowing elements.

    • I think blackholes still radiate some energy. what ive read, it has layer of particles that fuse together and create a radiance or radiation that escapes.yurimon
    • but i think it was just symbolic for the movie.yurimon
    • it's not symbolic, it's based on math that they had to figure out simply just to visualize it. Covered in that Wired article and video very thoroughly.monospaced
    • its also occult symbolic.yurimon

How can you hate on the robot? it's cool

  • prophetone0

    TARS will mess you up.

  • CygnusZero40

I loved TARS personality. He was funny as shit sometimes and I like that he didnt sound like a robot. Its just the visual design of him didnt really work out imo.

Watch when they get off the ranger when they land on water world. He says "follow me", and then just rocks back and forth because the design is ridiculous and barely mobile. First of all this is really bad directing on Nolans part, and they needed to come up with a better walking mechanism.

It just isnt graceful at all. When he walks since it doesnt have feet, just the square pillars banging awkwardly on the ground, it sounds like garbage cans being banged around.

  • CygnusZero4-1

Here you go, fast forward to 0:52. He says this way, and then cant move anywhere! lmao

Um if I were building a robot that ever needed to walk in water, I would start getting away from a flat box shape lol.

  • hotroddy0

The robots form was intentionally rudementary to emphasize that it's OS possesed inherently human personality characteristics.

It's a commentary on traditional depictions of sci-fi robots, like the one below that are inherently human in form - yet it's personality take on the form of a rudimentary OS.

    • an interesting explanation for a dumb design choice, resulting in comically bad visuals.dopepope
    • I think the design fits the movie. it would be to much to over design the robot. robot was good. was supposed to be a minimal multi functional shape.yurimon
    • minimal is fine. Dumb isn't. in fact, I'd argue it's not minimal. The minimalism is diminished by how lumbering and ridiculously awkward it is.dopepope
    • visually, the movie got so many things right, and this seemed purposely done wrong for annoyingly dumb reasons. very distracting.dopepope
    • TARS rocks!ernexbcn
    • I agree... TARS rocksAl_dizzle

While you nerds argue about the robot:

  • marychain0

DER.....Robot shape was an Homage to the monolith is 2001....

  • feel1

I have no problem with that robot...
There's even a creative exercise that is "draw me a robot"
if you ask this to a class of students, each one will draw a different robot.

so I like it because of that, its very original, funny footage to see someone cosplaying it and being hugged by other human like robots.

and oh, thats a nice reference to 2001
