Putin orders Russian troops into eastern Ukraine separatist regions
https://www.dw.com/en/putin-orde…
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his Defense Ministry to send Russian troops into eastern Ukraine's two breakaway regions, according to a decree published early on Tuesday, after he said Moscow would recognize their independence.
The Kremlin said Putin ordered the Russian forces to "maintain peace" in eastern Ukraine.
The decree did not specify when any such deployment would take place.
However, the move raises tensions, as Western leaders have warned Moscow could use a skirmish in the restive region as an excuse for a larger Russian attack.
Earlier Monday, Putin signed the decree stating Moscow now recognizes the "independence" of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" (DPR) and the "Luhansk People's Republic" (LPR).
Although the eastern Ukrainian provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk are claimed in whole by pro-Russia separatists, only parts of the provinces are under their control. Both provinces belong completely to Ukraine under international law.

One thing to remember is that Russia already had troops in eastern Ukraine. So by announcing they are sending in troops what has actually changed? It would be more accurate to say Russia has admitted they have invaded Ukraine.
It's unknown how many troops they have there but it's enough that hundreds of Russian soldiers have reportedly died in Donbas region. The Russian government doesn't acknowledge their deaths even to their own families as this article talks about:
https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-th…
However pictures of the dead have been published in some of the more anti-establishment Russian media and a Russian court even admitted to the troop presence in December.
"The case involved allegations of corruption concerning a catering service intended for 'the garrisons of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation stationed on the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics,' Judge Leonard Sholokhov wrote."
- back in the day there would have been a post on liveleak showing footage of the incident and the bodies... thanks for the info, yuekit.BuddhaHat

this whole thing is pretty absurd considering ukraine isn't officially in NATO yet and the US has been pushing for this war more than putin. not a fan of his but if russia wants to fuck around with ukraine, it's not our responsibility to go and stop them. shit the US did business with nazi germany until what, like '43?
why we can't go back to isolationism is obvious with the size and spread of the military now, but christ this entire situation is so dumb. but the liberals seem hell-bent on starting some shit.
- you can disagree with decades of western interventionism, the Iraq war, NATO expansion, whatever - and still see this for what it is.Fax_Benson

This war is a nothing burger.
Russia will annex Donets/Lugansk like they did with Crimea. There will or will not be some sanctions, there will or will not be some be some conflicts (been going on since 2014).
I don't think NATO/US want any of this- Except Russia has encircled entire Ukraine and is just waiting for some little excuse to go for the entire country.NBQ00
- They don't want the entire countrydrgs
- Putin wants a puppet government installed that does what Russia dictates. Thus he may invade entire country.NBQ00
- They only want the Russian territoriesdrgs
- they probably go for Alaske next yearuan

Kenya offered an interesting comment on Russia's actions. They seem to be thinking about what this could lead to if African states started following Russia's example and began using annexation to unify ethnic groups.

I could understand Putin wanting to take Venice, Rome or Lisbon... you know, somewhere sunny with good food and culture.
But Kiev? It looks cold, lots of ugly soviet depressing apartment blocks and the only famous dish is a dry chicken breast with garlic butter. Putin needs to get out in his yacht more and find some better places to invade.
- only marginally joking here.shapesalad
- Tell him. He might not have realised there are better places to invade.Ianbolton

They’re going to pull the champions league final out of st Petersburg and hopefully kick all Russian teams out of all competitions.
Bad enough Russians can’t compete under their own flag at the olympics, they’re just becoming more and more of a pariah state.
