If I had to do over, I'd probably go the Fuji XT-1 route. Maybe a Sony, but Sony doesn't have much glass I like and the lenses will end up being the same size/weight as the Nikon's I have, so almost making it irrelevant that the body is smaller, lighter.
I have a D800 and it's just so damn heavy (with grip), lenses are so damn heavy. I am not even bothering taking it on my next trip (I have a roller suitcase for the lenses, etc., just a pain to take anywhere).
It's superb, though, especially if you will be in the studio most of the time. You can get a used D800 for under $2k, I think.
- I have the X-T1 and love it to bits. Dials and switches for days, once the quick-select buttons are set up you hardly ever take your eye from the viewfinder.face_melter

@formed I'm also looking at XT-1 but the lenses can get expensive!
here is what I'm looking at right now: http://www.adorama.com/INKD610R.…
- I really wish the XT-1 was FF. I'd make the shift immediately if it was.Continuity

Trying not to open a new topic so i'm putting this here.
I have more or less 5k to spend on photo gear, after looking into different systems I decided for the 5D Mark III that I'm already very familiar with + a Sigma 20mm 1.4 and the Canon 100mm 2.8 L.
Still vaguely hesitating between the 20mm and a 35 but I think these suit my needs best. I don't already own Canon lenses but Canon is all I've been using these past few years appart from Hasselblads.
Now the 5D iV is rumoured to come out next month, if it does it will likely be at least 1k more than the III's current price.
4K video would be nice but I don't need it today, 120fps 1080p video I could definitely find a use for though but my main focus is photography. It bugs me to sit waiting for a rumoured new release when I'm eager to get shooting, but it seems silly to buy the old gen today if new gen comes out in 4 weeks, but I can't know for sure.
My question : as is often the case in other fields, I'd like to know if from your collective experiences the last batch of a camera like the 5D is more reliable (components, bugs etc) than the first batch of the following generation ?
Thanks!
- I would wait until the MarkIV is available, and then find a used MarkIII with a low shutter count for cheap.nb
- There are tons of people that always want the latest camera but they don't actually shoot much.nb
- I still regularly use the 5D Mk II because it's just awesome. I also have 5d Mk III and 5D S R bodies. However, there's a truth that some care to ignore...Morning_star
- ..., the camera is just a tool. What you get out of it largely depends on your abilities to maximise what you've got in your hands. One final thing...Morning_star
- ...Invest in the glass. L series all the way.Morning_star
- having only 20 and 100mm lenses seems odd.johnny_wobble
- 35mm is such a great focal length for 35mm film or sensor. If I could take only one lens, it'll always be the 35.nb
- nb, definitely. 35mm is my favourite.Morning_star
- you sure you may not want the Nikon D750, its very, very nice and half the price of a 5D III which is getting old-ish....vaxorcist
- Canon has to be kidding if they don't make the 5D Mk IV a 4K device.CyBrainX
- I take it back. You can shoot 4K and it should be available next month according to this. http://www.wired.com…CyBrainX

BUMP!
Anything new and exciting?
I am so happy with my couple of primes and my Nikon d610.
I finally understand when my pro photog friend told me, "...none of that matters..." after asking what gear he used.
I'd still love to own one of the new mirrorless Sony or fuji system though...
feels good.

- thinking about getting that DJI thing too.pango
- thinking of getting the sigma 24-25 f/2jaylarson
- got any video sample of the DJI, it seems like it would be awesome owning one.sofakingback
- 25-25? What kind of monster zoom is that?!pango
- I do, we just shot a video for the city w it (people were shot with better stuff tho). It's pretty amazing and a blast to use.formed
- Cons: Sucks batteries fast! Buy a bunch! Then you have your phone's batter to worry about. The wifi sync can really suck too, but once it's working it worksformed
- They have one that you can attach their higher end camera with interchangeable micro4/3 lenses...want SO bad, but it's thousands + lensesformed
- Oh, and you can't really zoom. But overall, I think it's a real steal for less than $600. The video looks polished and it is incredibly versatile. Love it!formed
- Pango - that's a Nikkor 24-70, it's a beast but my go to lens.formed
- yeah Osmo is fun, using it feels like a vacation compared to my big rig that weighs 5000 pounds it seemsmoldero
- Yup. My D800 with battery grip and 24-70 weighs like 8lbs. I developed tennis elbow holding that damn thing!formed
- They just released an Osmo with zoom for a tad moreformed

i have to say im happy that canon finally decided to join the rest of the world with the new 5D .. 4k is long over due..
that said, cant say im that blow away by the rest of it..
to be honest, if im going to drop $3500 on something, its going to be better that that..which is a shame, i love my MK III .. only having 4k isnt really enough of a reason.
- Aye. I'm going to be upgrading from my 7D to a Mk III when the Mk IV comes out, just because I'll be able to get a second hand one cheap-ish, and the Mk IV ...Continuity
- ... doesn't *really* have much new on offer besides more megapixels, for stills. Oh, and the touch screen. Still not enough.Continuity
- and 4k isn't ground breaking now. A GH4 shoots good 4k for $1000. It depends on the quality, I guess, so we'll seeformed
- I think Canon/Nikon are just too far behind now. If they let it shoot 6k or something, then it would be interesting at least.formed
- I can't see buying any camera now that doesn't shoot 4K unless you are just not going to shoot video at all.CyBrainX

Pana GH4
Voitlander 25mm .95
Oly 8mm 1.8, SLR Magic Hyperprime 50mm .95
Pana 20mm 1.7
Optex 16:9 anamorphic lens
LA7200 16:9 anamorphic lensI use a GH4 and I was slow to warm to micro four thirds but I think it's hitting it's stride; fast focusing, weather proof housing, 4k, super light weight, long battery life, also Olympia and Panasonic makes weather proof lenses. I want a good camera I can buy and use but note it's a slightly different platform than standard DSLRs but half the price! if that is any factor...
I'll probably get the Oly 45mm 1.8 or Pana 45 1.7 not thrilled with the Hyperprime that might go on ebay as well as an anamorphic.

Still have a Nikon D800 with some busted lenses: 50 1.4G, 24-120 4g, sigma 150 macro 2.8
Working: 17-35, 70-200, 85 1.4d
Just got a good paying contract to hire gitg. should allow me to atleast insure this stuff again and repair my equipment. especially that 50mm
- jaylarson0
if i had enough to start over, i'd look at canon. especially with their 1.2 lenses.
- really? I've always wondered if it makes a difference - the 1.4 vs. 1.2. Nikon's 85 1.4 is pretty amazingformed
- but for your type of shooting aren't the Nikon ultra wides the best in the business?HijoDMaite
- canon just released a game changing lens. and i mostly shoot people. but i would like more tilt shift lenses for landjaylarson

If anyone is interested Im about to sell my FujiFilm XT-1 body, very well maintained. Lemme know.
- Why selling it? I'd love to pick up something a step above my x70, that had detachable lenses.mg33
- FujiLove is always having contests to win lenses, I just don't have the camera for it.mg33
- Yea why you getting rid of it sofa?HijoDMaite
- Because Im getting the XT2, this is the best camera i have ever used, i want to reinvest in it for another couple years. Might as well get the new one :)sofakingback
- Also, have an X70 for everyday random stuff. you would think I would be a better photographer or share my stuff. lolsofakingback
- Anyway, the XT line and the lenses are fucking outstanding. :Dsofakingback
- mg33, fyi. The XT1 and the X70 share the same sensor. So the quality of the pix are the same from that perspective. The dial layout is what makes the XT1 so awesofakingback
- Awesome. Such a fun camera to use. You just can't help play with it and try different things.sofakingback
- Nice. Not sure I'll buy it but good to know. I love the X70, use it primarily for street shots and around the house. Beats taking my D610 out.mg33

just bought the Nikon ED 80-200 f/2.8D for $500.

- It will only go with the new run of Moto's - that's the whole point of the mods. But you know it's probably only rebranded Sony kit.face_melter
- After having a camera w/ only LCD I'll never buy another one w/o a view finder.formed

I finally upgraded my DSLR body to a Rebel T5. Not too exciting by today's standards, but a major step up from my circa 2005 Rebel XT. I do think it has a noticeable difference in the quality of images it produces.
I don't use it that often, but when I do I'm still shooting primarily with my f/1.8 50mm prime lens.
I've learned that it's really hard to get crisp photos when opened all the way up to that 1.8 aperture. The depth of field is just too damn small. So I generally set it to around 2.8 unless I really need the extra light.
I want to get this lens:
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-…
I think that one will be a great all-arounder that will make me want to shoot more. The 50mm is hard to shoot with indoors or in tight spaces due to the 1.6 magnification ratio. And it doesn't really work for anything other than portraits.
- all this is truthHijoDMaite
- yea, with that 1.6 crop makes for a decent portrait lens tho.jaylarson

I now use this setup for 1 year:
Sony Alpha 7RII, Alpha 6300 (backup+additional filming), GoPro with Feiyu Gimbal. 35mm, 55mm and 85mm lenses (Sony + Zeiss).
My camera bag only weights 8kg, including the Macbook Air. Nice for travelling.
My reason for switching from Canon 1ds MKIII to Sony was that they took way too long to come up with something good. It's nice to shoot with the Sony. But I am not a tech guy (nerd) who says, everyone should switch to mirrorless. I even kept my Canon with 50mm, 85mm and 40mm pancake.
