During WWII, when steel and aluminum were in short supply, the british planned to use a mixture of woodpulp and ice called Pykrete to make an aircraft carrier out of ice. It was called Project Habakkuk, and the metal remains of the protoype (now melted) are at the bottom of Patricia Lake in Canada.
