1) Technical: Design makes peeing a big deal so there are many hovers. Smell of hygiene products when bins aren't emptied regularly.
2) Philosophical / Psychological: The culture of shame, secrecy and disgust around bodily functions hinders etiquette education and creates "fuck the system" pathologies. Since the system is stronger with women ("don't poop" etc.) the rebellion ups the ante too. There might also be a gender role issue where many women are incharge of cleaning bathrooms at home and might act differently at public/work restrooms (might also depend on the sex of the cleaning service workers, if one was hired).On a personal note, work stalls often suck, but a female colleague said the women's are worst (explanatory signs were hung to no avail). From reading online it seems H.R. will intervene only if health risk claims will be made, and their method will be surveillance (checking the stalls before/after).

Hunger strikes cause pain that can be relieved by drinking salty water, so prison authorities will sometimes deny salt.
Sometimes prisoners opt for liquid supplements (like those given to malnourished) therefore technically still not eating (this is still a very difficult task for the striker). This allows hunger strikes to go on for a much longer time than.
This info won't necessarily be communicated due to doctor-patient confidentiality/political pressure or contract binds.--
